Same. 97 might not have a ton of games in my top 20 (maybe just FFVII), but it has quite a few in my top 100

Analysis

I still maintain that with a better picture 2000 would have defeated 1996 and I would have still been alive in the guru. My bracket had 2000 winning this match so it’ll be an auto loss for me. Anyway back to the actual match. 1997 will be going into the match as the favourite. Final Fantasy VII is arguably the strongest game between the two years though I’d imagine quite a few people would go with Super Mario 64. After that Super Mario RPG is likely the next strongest game, but due to its overlap with Super Mario 64 it may not bring as much support.

In terms of depth I would have to give 1997 the advantage. Mario Kart 64 and Star Fox 64 likely take out Crash Bandicoot and Kirby Super Star though SFF/LFF may be the only way 1996 could win. If Nintendo fans can concentrate around 1996 while Playstation fans are split an upset could occur. I think there is a good chance of this happening. Nintendo SFF has always been massive; I mean we saw it in 2009 though GoldenEye 007 held up relatively well which could spell disaster for the year. Meanwhile outside of characters/games from the same series Playstation tends to avoid a lot of SFF. Sure Final Fantasy VII and Castlevania: SotN would easily win over Crash Bandicoot and Tomb Raider, but they could end up costing more votes.

I don’t think 1996 will cause the upset. The lack of Resident Evil hurts an already shallow 1996. I still feel 2000 would have won this match and if this match turns out to be close I will at least feel in the back of my mind a bit shortchanged.

1997 had to be hurt by the pic factor last round as it only had an unimpressive 70.98% on 2007 while it could come close to 70% on 1996 this round. And everyone would assume 1996 is much stronger than 2007.

1997 would have done better in the first 2 rounds if PaRappa got replaced for either Mario Kart 64 or Star Fox 64.

I think 97 did fine with it's first round pic. Having SOTN and FFVII as the first two slots was critical. That probably matters more than having it's fourth strongest game being Parappa or Star Fox.

I thought 71% was pretty good! That's about where I pegged it and I have 1997 in the finals.

I just don't think 1996 is a top tier year. 2000 might have been a step above, but it's hard to imagine the pic factor being able to overcome this even if it had gotten balanced pics.

I think 1996 and 1992 probably aren't too far apart, so 1998 should still 60/40 1997.

I voted 96 but I honestly think both of these years represent kind of a lull in gaming for me. There's a grand total of 0 all-time favorites between the two and barely like 20 at most games each year I have any interest in playing. I think it's tragic but not surprising they respectively beat my two favorite years in gaming (2000 and 2007).

Anyways results here are unsurprising. 97's pics destroy 96.

The 2000's years in general are stronger relative to the 90's than I would've expected pre-contest. Especially the 2010's.

GameFAQs users may have stopped gaming much (or at, *homepage visiting* GameFAQsers), but they seem to be aware of which modern games have a good rep.

Honestly though, Resident Evil would have looked so unflattering if Bacon took the one pic made for it, so I don't think 96 is losing much by not having it here.

Besides, RE isn't the real snub here, it's the N64 console itself.

Though it's unspoken, I think the decision was made not to include console pics. So 1996 never had a chance to get that sort of support.

Wouldn't discount the possibility of SFF between 98 and 92. It would be really nice if the latest shift made FFVII strong again.

Man, what a thrashing. I was making headway in the top 50 too, but I don't see 2001 beating 1997 now. This picture really hits home how good 1997 was. I was banking on nostalgia for Super Mario 64 and the N64 being released to make it look stronger than it should be based on it's list of releases.

Maybe if 2001 gets the best possible picture and 1997 gets a worse picture than this round, then it's close.

2001 needs to hope the picture format changes, I think. With 8 pics 1997's quality is clear.

What would people predict for a 1992 vs. 1996 match?

LTTP and SM64 are even, and I guess that's more or less how the years would go.

97 will break 30 % on it. Maybe 40 if 97 has a good day. Let's be real.

97 is getting a ton of n64 support as well. A lot of. 64 fans would vote 97 over 96. Just like me. The lineup is stronger. All 96 has is mario 64. 97 has got Turok,mK goldeneye diddy Kong star fox 64. 96 was a pretty Barron year for games tbh.

98 however is a different story. It's basically going to be OoT vs ffvii and we all know how that turns out these days.

97 would be a lot weaker. Wouldn't go past round 2.

98 would still be the favourite. Pokemon metal gear and the vast amount of stellar pc games alone would push it above every other year. But it would be close.

They probably would have if it wasn't for rallies. Maybe chrono trigger would gotten to finals but let's not act like that didn't get rallied either. It did.

ff7 and OoT are the two most popular games on this site and have been since the birth of the site. They will be for a long time to come as well.

Doesn't make sense. I mean some will. But 97 has virtually a ton of ps1 support.

I'd say the n64 fan base is split. Hence why 97 is dominant.
