Guys don't try to make this a partisan issue. It's definitely bipartisan. Just because the Republicans often seem to want to gut it doesn't mean much about how it's in everyone's best interest to keep net neutrality around. It would essentially be like defunding public roads, or public land in general.

Nothing is going to happen. 90 days from now everything will be the same. This is liberals blowing shit out of proportion again.

Sure. ISPs are spending millions on lobbying for "nothing to happen".

I think he's probably going on about how Net Neutrality will not be going away anytime soon since there is already such a large backlash against it. Though he's delusional if he thinks that by getting rid of net neutrality that nothing is going to happen to us.

The Deadpool posted...
See there are two umbrellas of the communications act, Title I and Title II. ISPs used to fall under Title I.

When Net Neutrality became a thing Verizon sued the FCC arguing it did NOT have the power to enforce those rules under Title I.

Verizon WON that lawsuit. The judge said if the FCC wanted to properly regulate ISPs they would have to classify them under Title II.

That's what the last time this was brought up was about: Should we move them to Title II or not. And we did. And it worked out fine.

Now they want to go back to Title I, which would prevent he FCC from controlling them again.

The part that is particularly disingenuous about this whole bit is that our new head of FCC, who is playing this off as 'no big deal' is a former Verizon lawyer. He is well aware of the previous case, even if he pretends it didn't happen.

Can someone explain what this is and how it'll affect us?

Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T can decide which websites and services can be throttled, and which can be charged a premium.

You like Wikipedia? Comcast can say "hey, pay us an extra $5/month to access Wiki and other educational websites."

Verizon can say "Netflix hurts our cable sales, so we're going to throttle your access to Netflix so it will only load in SD or not even load at all."

They will be able to choose what you see on the Internet and how you see it.

I'm still confused. There are sites you have to pay for and there are different levels of bandwidth at different prices. How is it going to change?

If I don't pay 5$ a month I can't access Netflix.

Right now, I have 75mb/s internet but I could have more bandwith if I paid more. Isn't it the same thing?

Not quite. You pay Verizon for 75mb/s. Right now, as long as Verizon is under Title II, they are not legally allowed to say, lower the speed of Netflix to only 1 mb/s. Or prevent you from reading Wikipedia. Verizon can sell you all sites at lower speed, or all sites at higher speed. But they can't pick and choose which sites go at which speed. All or nothing.

Under Title I the FCC is legally incapable of enforcing those rules. Which means your ISP could charge you for the internet piece meal. Want porn? Extra charge. Want Wiki? Extra charge.

More likely, they will charge companies. Netflix DEPENDS on fast internet. So if Netflix doesn't want to play ball with Verizon, all Verizon costumer have a terrible experience with Netflix.

This also stiffles competition. Large company pays tons of money to have a fast website and any small smpetitior gets a slower website.

Don't our phones do this already?

An example from Canada, but the practice itself would be applicable to the US if it tossed net neutrality.

This is a tricky one, because zero-rating is good for a lot of consumers. The problem is it gives incumbent streaming services an inherent advantage. Even if you allow the service to work with all of the major platforms, it puts a barrier entry for new services that don't have an in with the ISP.

I can also understand wanting a free market approach to ISPs, but at least in the US and Canada, the barrier to entry is just too high that it's really difficult to compete with the incumbents. You'd need a lot of money to begin with, and as Google Fiber has shown, even that might not be enough.

Summary:

Pay your isp for internet access
Pay netflix to access their service
Pay your isp again for normal speeds specifically for netflix
Pay your isp again for each site you dont want throttled

With net neutrality, you only pay the top 2
