I'm terrified of them. I have a mini panic attack when a warning or watch is active in my area.

Absolutely. I use to be like you TC when I was a kid. But now I reserve the terror for when one is actually at my doorstep. Which so far hasn't happened. Although I was close enough to hear one, the stories about them sounding like trains are true. That one ended up killing a few people down the road from where I was at

I live in tornado alley. They're not super common, but they're common enough that I don't pay them a whole lot of attention.

They're my number one fear. Lived in southern Ohio most of my life, had a couple touch down and do structural damage within a few miles of my house, but have never actually seen one (though I have seen the storm cells that contained them).

Apart from them being the near-literal fingers of a wrathful God and worthy of fear and respect, I think my fear stems from a touch of childhood scarring. We lived in a mobile home while my parents were saving money and building our permanent residence over the span of about 7-8 years, so that's one thing. Plus for a few years, our local news station had these super-creepy weather adds involving a tornado ripping through the screen and coming at the viewer. Commercial couldn't have been more than five seconds long, but it freaked the shit out of me every time it happened, and I was nervous as hell every time whatever show I was watching on that network would cut to a commercial break.

And there was also my fundamental misunderstanding of the 'Watch' and 'Warning' system. At the time I thought a 'watch' meant that someone was literally watching a tornado tear through the sky, and a 'warning' pretty much meant that one was coming directly to your house to kill you. Naturally you can imagine the scene I made the very first time I saw a 'watch' change to a 'warning' on the tv screen.

this was a great watch, luckily it didnt hit any high population areas, found it interesting how everyone was trying to get out of OKC clogging the freeways and if the tornado actually hit there would have been mass casualties because of everyone leaving

If one was barreling directly overhead, yeah. One's mortality becomes readily apparent when a colossal tower of wind and debris is staring you in the face.

the sirens are more ominous than the tornadoes themselves

The irony is that when I lived in Ohio, I did have a perfectly competent basement. Now that I live in Florida, I don't - if a tornado comes, my best chance is to drag my mattress to the tub and throw it on top of me. And yet my fear has diminished quite a bit - can't tell you the last time I had a tornado nightmare (though watching that vid will probably give me one tonight, lol).

I think the thing that's always shivered me about them is that they can strike in the middle of the night, with little to no warning. In Ohio I lived out in the country, far out of earshot of any sirens, whereas now I live in more suburban area. There's something about living mostly alone out in the dark wilderness that exponentially compounds the fear when bad weather rolls through.
