Are you distracted by Afro Hairstyles?

17 y/o Jenesis Johnson from Florida has blasted her private high school principal after he told her to fix her Natural Afro because it was a "DISTRACTION" to fellow students!!

Lynn Burgess, the assistant principal at North Florida Christian said her full, natural hair was "not neat" and "needs to be put in style", by which he meant STRAIGHTENED like a white girls!!

She said "It is fixed" of his demands and insisted her hair is natural and meets that criterial for natural hair styles. But she was told if it isn't fixed, she risks her ENROLLMENT at the private high school and could be booted because of it!!

The demands comes as a surprise to her as she's been wearing it on and off since 7th grade and daily for the past 7 months. She admitted that her hair is large but she's alwas sitting at the back of the classroom as to not obstruct anyone's view.

She says the uproar happened a week ago when a teacher asked her: How long are you rocking that hairstyle?" which then prompted other kids to ask her about the styling and upkeep of the afro..it was only 2 days later that the principal asked her to straighten it out and said "No faddish or extreme hairstyles, and hair should be neat and clean at all times, insinuating that her hair was DIRTY!!..but the school handbook makes no mention of afro hairstyles.

Her mother, Lisa said "You might say that it didn't fit the handbook. But i saw and what she heard is a woman telling her that she's not pretty, hair hair does fit society"

Massachusetts attorney general sent a letter to schools demanding they ceease "subjecting students of colour, especially black students, to differential treatmeant" after students at several schools wore hair extensions and braids were facing suspension.

But North Florida Christian is a private institution and does not have to comply with anti-discrimination laws, a fact that leaves her academic future there in question.

She said "It hurts me. It's hurting me. For my people behind me, the younger ones, they're going to have hair like me. Why can't they wear their natural hair?"

If Jenesis doesn't straighten her hair next fall, they will refund her money and kick her out...

Are you "distracted" by Afro hairstyles?

Jenesis -

This really isn't a new thing. As far as America is concerned, whenever there's a dress code established, you should assume the standard was based within the realm of what's reasonably attainable for a white person. Black hair & the fact it doesn't naturally conform to White America aesthetics is a constant issue for blacks whether it be socially or professionally. The "style" they're looking for can be attained, but it usually takes time and/or money to do so.

I had to shave my big bushy beard to comply with regulations at the place I work at now. Had been growing it for over a year and while I kept it neat and trim, it wasn't a compatible thing with my job.

So I shaved it off. No big deal. It's a pretty good job, and putting that at risk just because of my beard would be rather stupid.

Now having said that... that girl's education is far more important than my job I have now. If I had decided my beard was more important than that job, I could have kept it and just looked for a different job that didnt mind me having it. This girl though would have a much harder time transferring schools simply due to her hair. She needs to just bite the bullet and change her hair for now until she finishes her education, then she can have whatever style of hair she wants.

However, dress and appearance codes exist EVERYWHERE. unless you work from home or at some call centers that just don't GAF, she may need to change her hair or dress style to accommodate that.

the problem is is it's discriminatory.

unless if there's some kinda middle ground where everyone has to have a similar style comes as close to naturally for them, you're penalizing someone for having "black" hair.

This. It wasn't a hygiene issue, she sat so it wasn't a distraction for the others, and it didn't violate their dress code. There is no problem.

It said her hair was "not neat". Natural or not, you have to abide by the dress code. If my hair was naturally chaotic and my boss told me to gel it or something, I would have to abide or I would get my ass fired. I can't just say "Well this is how my hair is naturally so deal with it". I've had bosses tell me to cut my hair because it was getting too long, and I did so.

Only difference here is that this is school and that was work. And it's much easier to just keep your hair how you like it and go to a different school than it is to find a new job.

there's nothing un-neat about her hair, though (unless if it normally looks different from the pictures)

from the pictures you can tell her hair is well-groomed. otherwise, it'd look matted and/or uneven.

But he said she's penalized because of her genetics ("black" hair), not the style. Meaning the way it grows. It doesn't need to look like her mom's; just enough to get by in school. If they're not willing to comply, I say just go to a different school.

Think you missed the point there. Mom is black. Mom has acceptable hair. Daughter is black. Daughter can also have acceptable hair, but chooses not to. She chooses to wear it in one of the ways that isn't allowed by her school.
