My mother recently traded in her Mercedes GL550 for a BMW X3 (both mom and dad are empty nesters - we're all grown and they don't need all that space). Her 2011 example was worth $25,000 - something they paid ~$100k for since that thing was loaded to the gills. Imagine her surprise when I told her that a 2011 Lexus LX570 (competitor product with the same amount of miles) was worth a whopping 10 grand more.

That exercise convinced me more to stay the hell away from German cars. When they're out of warranty, you're essentially playing Russian roulette with all the barrels loaded.

My TL is loaded with leather (not leatherette/vinyl), an advanced AWD system, and a real engine. Nothing from Germany could offer me that much value per dollar. You can right now build a $70,000 E-Class and it'll only have a 4-cylinder engine.

Japanese cars hold their value the best. It's been like that for a while. Your mom got hosed on the trade in because the dealer will always low ball you in an attempt to resell the car for some type of profit. They also are fully aware that used German cars are nightmares.

Everyone gets hosed in trade-ins - that's not even the point. The point is that the comparable Lexus product was worth more. Obviously you get more by selling privately and the Lexus would still be worth more.

You know the joke about an engagement ring losing half its value when you leave the store? A Mercedes lose 1/4 of its value when you leave the parking lot. Toyota has made Emergency breaking a standard and the Germans are only starting to catch up. Lexus is so much better than German luxury brands.

The problem is that our president can't articulate himself, always says things like this and his team has to run in behind him several times a week to "clarify" what he meant. It's not just an embarrassment to our country but one day he could fuck up and say something really stupid that starts some nonsense before the people who hold his hand have a chance to "clarify" what he meant. How so many of his statements need to be "clarified" and "well what he actually meant was..." is absurd.

He said what he meant. There are more mercedes in the US than Chevys in Germany.

People are REALLY stretching to insult the man... I mean, there is plenty out there already, yet they pick apart things that are perfectly fine...

There is nothing fine about it. First in the Germany people don't want to be Chevy's that is not something we should force. I am sorry besides the Corvette and the Camaro Chevy's just are not that impressive to many people. Unless you are the "real" people in the ads Next .

I stated Before that the BMW has a Major plant in South Carolina. BMW is the BIGGEST net exported in the US. And South Carolina and Alabama also have large Mercedes-Benz factories. Lastly most people don't live on 5th Ave. So it is odd to use that as the snap shot of seeing what everyone else drives.
