Brotherhood just sort of rushes the first dozen or so episodes because they were already adapted back in early 2000's, but Brotherhood follows the rest of the manga without crappy filler (which we had back in 2004, and we LOVED it, but it's 2017 and we HATE it)

Shit turned into generic battle Shonen trash at some point, and the tonal shifts were too much.

Absolutely no way is 2003 anywhere near as good as Brotherhood.

Brotherhood is literally one of the best Shonen of all time. Never falls into generic territory.

part 1 of naruto is pretty well made imo but alas it completely falls apart and destroys whatever positive legacy it might've had by not committing to its grittiness throughout part 2

Naruto killed itself for me just through it's insane amount of filler and their refusal to get to the point, taking several episodes to take care of something that could have been over with in one or two eps.

The first show didn't have crappy filler after the beginning, it had a completely diverging plot. Which, IMO, is preferable over filler (unless the filler is really good). But the diverging plot can still be bad, even if it's the right call.
