Define what you mean by descrimination, and I'll see if I agree with that statement.

Refusing service to someone because of an immutable characteristic, such as race, gender, or sexual orientation. That's a clear example of discrimination.

Company A holds an event for white people.

Company B refuses service to white people.

Supposing those were two generic headlines, you would think they were describing the same situation?

There is no relevant difference. Both are examples of racial discrimination, and last I checked, that was illegal.

Great, thanks for defining it. If we use your definition, then it would be discrimination. Unfortunately, that's not how I determine whether businesses can discriminate between clientele. It's too incomplete to be useful. I determine it based on both refusal based on immutable characteristics along with the relevance of those characteristics to the operation of the business. If refusal is unnecessary, then that's when it becomes a problem.

That is the relevant difference. In this case, their standard operation of the business is still open to anyone and everyone (so long as you can pay). However, they decided to host an event for a certain group of people. The operation of that event requires that they only allow those invited to an event.
