I'm actually pretty stable financially

me getting robbed twice means I need protection around here and my two cat furballs obviously aren't up to the task

and while my cats ARE loyal to me, nothing beats the stupid, blind loyalty of a dog

I don't think I feel lonely, but having a mutt around sounds nice. Also, it'll break up the monotony of my routine life for the past few years

a friend of mine showed me a young German Shepard dog thats at a shelter and I think I fell in love with him

I actually went to go visit him, hes scared out of his mind and hes extremely timid. I felt really bad for him

I'm strongly considering doing it

but I dunno, I've never owned a dog before. I mean, I've had a family dog when I was little, but I didn't take care of him.

could I get some tips on owning a dog so I can let it swim in my head?

what are things I would need to do

I'm aware cats are easy and this is a different ball game

I've only ever had dogs for companionship, and never protection so I can only give you general dog tips.

The way to break a timid dog's shyness is to gradually introduce it to people on neutral ground (say a dog park as opposed to your own home where it might hide/be overprotective). The younger a dog the easier it is to train as a general rule, but you can definitely teach an old dog new tricks. And my cat is annoying me so that's all for now.

Worth it. As board 8's local Disney Princess, it's one hundred percent worth it. If you want a dog for protection, go go with a German Shepherd. Very Loyal and a strong sense for your surroundings. A certain intimidation factor comes with them as well even though they are so damn loveable.

If not, go with a pitbull. Easier to groom but not as smart.

German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers are top tier. Go for it

As for how it will be I guess it will somewhat depend on the individual dog (how he will get along with your cats and general behavior once he gets used to things etc)

Consider taking the dog to obedience courses. They're generally more for training the person rather than the dog, though. It won't protect you or anything if you don't know what you're doing.

Yeah... I know everyone here is all about rescues so I'm just going to say that you need to take the training seriously and you should probably get some outside help for it. Especially if you've never owned a dog.

I should probably buy some essentials. Dog bowl and food, collar, leash, probably one of those things you stick on the lawn and attach to his collar

My friend has one of those

Of course, yes you should get a dog.

A puppy is super hard work at first, and odds are good it WILL chew on something you love, so be mentally ready for that (my first dog was a black lab puppy, and he ruined my bed, a pair of shoes, my wallet + all my credit cards, and the carpet). I didn't know what I was doing then, though, and my Corgi only chewed on the corner of my coffee table.

I recommend crate training them ASAP. It makes potty training easier, and also helps keep them from getting separation anxiety when you have to go to work. It can be rough at first hearing them cry, but trust me when I say they will eventually love it.

For my dogs, I just say "kennel" and they automatically go to the room with their crate and get inside. It's awesome.

Plus, a dog (especially a puppy) is a fuckin chick magnet. It's win win.

It turned out to be a bust. The pupper was a bit Wild and he would not listen to anyone. And by that, I mean Everytime We whistle or patted our knees, etc, he would not give anyone a glance. And everytime we touched him, he would jump up

The lady there then surmised that he might be deaf

Sorry but I don't think I could deal with that

In other news, there was a beautiful blue persian there

.....I kinda want her >_>
