I say it like you do, but that's because I'm also in SoCal. I don't drive, though, so honestly I always get the 405, 101, and 5 mixed up since I'm never on them unless someone else is driving.

we use 'the' in Ontario

It's actually a thing up here on the Canadian prairies as well. The highways are called things like "the #1" and "the #12".

I can only speak for myself, but I have a rare genetic eye condition so my vision sucks for driving. You do not want me to drive a car.

It doesn't sound strange to me at all, but I'm also sitting here saying freeways in my head and I don't say "the" before them.

I'm from Nor Cal and I just say "Take 80/5/etc"

Here in Phoenix AZ we say "the" before too.

The 10, the 101, the 60, the 202, etc..

But Phoenix is basically an extension of socal anyway.

In Florida we just say the number. 95, 75, 595, there's a few others.

I'm pretty sure it's not just a SoCal thing as I have heard people use "the" before a freeway number in Texas as well. Then again, I spent most of my life in SoCal so my memory might be biased lol.
