For sake of convenience, you would be able to enable and disable it at will. It gives me a compass, locations have their own icons, health bar, it let's me know the direction my enemies are coming from, and if I'm trying to be sneaky it let's me know how aware people around me are. And of course the the best reason of all VATS. Just open the inventory (which pauses the game), reach into the game world behind it, put an item into your inventory, and put it back on the ground. Having real-time notifications that you're thirsty, tired, hungry, or diseased would help.
