If that's what you believe. Forums and chat sites are not social media to me. Neither is Youtube, DailyMotion and other video streaming sites. Nor is consoles/gaming.

so·cial me·di·a
noun
noun: social media; plural noun: social medias

websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.

Well it is a website, arguably it lets us create and share content if you consider posts content and arguably it lets us network socially if you ignore the fact that most people here are only ever known by their screen name.

So maybe strictly speaking, but I wouldn't consider it a social networking site in the same way I wouldn't consider a taco a sandwich.

so this doesn't matter at all

the definition you posted doesn't say anything about the users have to have shared their real names.

No but it does say to network socially and I question the ability to do that if you don't actually know the person you are talking to.

we are literally socializing together though

right now, this whole conversation

socializing

if i go to some random person on twitter, i don't know who they are, but they have their real name up, does that really make a difference? i know nothing about them, but i know their name?

i don't know your name, but i know your username. that's a facsimile i can use as a replacement for your name

socializing

Yes, but the operative word is not social, it is network.

interact with other people to exchange information and develop contacts, especially to further one's career.

I question the ability to develop contacts when you don't know the user except by a site specific handle. In the strictest sense of the word sure. You can make friends on the board, exchange info and meet them on other sites, but I personally feel that stretches the definition. So while technically social media, I personally wouldn't consider it as such. Much like I would not consider a taco a sandwich despite the fact that it is meat cheese and veggies inbetween two layers of bread.

like I said if you consider posts creating and sharing content. I think it could be called social media, but would argue your stretching the definition pretty thin considering every website with a comment section would be social media.

Technically, boards pre-date the concept of social media and have structural differences so it's iffy.

Youtube generally qualifies under the traditional definition of social media.

You can hide behind usernames on every social media as well, though. Even on Facebook.

The problem with that definition is that, in its strictest sense, the reviews and FAQs sections would both count despite having zero interactivity.

Except you can literally troll with the truth. Trolling is largely a matter of intent to annoy (or, in other cases, to present feelings/beliefs you don't actually hold), not just outright telling lies.
