People say it sets unrealistic standards for appearances, but when you think about it, you start to wonder: isn't photography in general about manipulating the truth?

When you setup lighting, when you put on makeup, choose an appealing angle, all you're doing is basically adjusting your shot to make it look as glamorized as possible.

If you put on makeup, you're basically hiding a flaw on your face, and you could argue that THAT is a form of deception.

And that's the point of professional photography: to set itself apart from the boring real world. If we want to be truly realistic, then let's get rid of makeup and lighting altogether and shoot boring shots like everyone does with their phone.

The important thing is to be able to separate fantasy from reality. We have to accept that appealing photography applies a certain degree of fantasy. ]
