Parents got me a Costco membership for Christmas that I finally redeemed, and I figured it'd be a good time to sign up for a card since they have the card alongside the membership.

Max it out, as long as you pay minimum payments you'll be fine. If need be just get another credit card.

Also try and keep the balance relatively low compared to the maximum credit. Your credit score will look better if banks see you regularly using a small percentage of your credit versus using a larger percent.

If/When banks offer you a credit increase they're usually worth it but be mindful that these involve a hard check on your credit score but if you don't do it often it won't hurt your score. To my understanding though anything above 700 or 750 is good so don't be too nit picky about having a "perfect" score.

Yeah I mean, for several years I've been more or less using my debit card like a credit card when I don't have cash (more recently because I moved north and my bank isn't in the area, so I don't like paying $5 just to get cash).

So it was pointed out to me that whenever I use a debit card, if I had used a credit card instead, I'd be getting points or rewards or wtfever they're calling it these days.

I check my checking account status and activity online virtually every day, so I'll certainly be doing the same thing on whatever online portal they have to check my purchases and make sure my checking account has enough cash when it's time to make a payment. I really don't buy a lot out of the ordinary, like rent, groceries, and the occasional video game, so it shouldn't change much.

Corporate sales for a network security / PCI compliance company. Making 40k base with 15k uncapped commission, for a total of 55k (though likely a bit more because sales forecasts look good, especially since Chipotle's PoS systems got hacked recently).

As long as you pay off a good amount you should be fine. Never max it out though. Credit Cards are amazing, and people complain about them because they have no self control.

How the hell have you never had a credit card if you're making $55K a year?

Not sure yet. I don't even have the card, it should come in the mail this week or, at worst, early next week.

I haven't tried logging into the portal yet. I think I'm supposed to get login information with the mailing.

I never got one in college for fear of going overboard with what limited funds I had at the time. Then once I got my first job (36k base + 14k+ commission), I just kinda forgot about it.

Sucks too because I could've been building credit and getting points for the past year and a half, but whatever. It's "past me" relegating it to "future me."

Past me is an asshole.

credit card rewards give you fuck all anyways. I've spent about 8000 dollars on my credit card and I think I can maybe afford a tank of gas with my points.

Yeah, credit card points/miles/whatever accrue slowly.

But it is better than using debit where you get no benefits.

Just pay it off in full every month. if you owe interest, that defeats the point of the miles depending on how much you owe(or keep owing).

If I get a $200 plane ticket with my points, but end up paying 200+ in interest if i dont pay it off...ouch. not worth it. gotta be smart but if you arent stupid credit cards are redic easy to manage

Here's my question though - if I pay it off on-time every month, then interest should be a non-factor, right?

Yeah. You pay interest on what you owe. if its paid in full every month you owe nothing and get benefits for free, essentially.

Well, he doesn't, and you clearly haven't seen what people will pay B2B sales reps, especially in the tech/software industry.
