On Mike and Mike this morning they threw out this interesting fact. Ainge has been GM since 2003 and has had 38 Celtics draft picks. He has yet to draft a single all star.

well sure, but only 4 of those were lottery picks, and two of those (Smart and Brown) are still too young to make a verdict on (I doubt Smart will ever be an All-Star, but Brown could be)

and the other two were traded immediately! (Jeff Green turned into Ray Allen so I think that worked out well)

With only three of those picks being top 15, I'm not surprised in the least.

that seems like a weird fluke. he traded for Rondo on draft day and were a good team for most of his tenure.

count how many of those draft picks were from the past 3 drafts. and how many players in those drafts have been all stars. (quick check is 14/0)

looking at first rounders during the Ainge era, you have a bunch of guys who were traded for Kendrick Perkins, KG and Ray Allen. Tony Allen and Avery Bradley good pickups for their spot. Your only real miss is Randy Foye, but there were only three other all stars available in that draft and they traded for one (Rondo).

like, how many all stars were available when they picked? I mean are you really gonna knock them for passing on Paul Millsap 10 years ago.

how many teams achieve success by drafting all stars

this is silly

Oklahoma City comes to mind.
San Antonio Spurs although recently that's changed.
Cleveland drafted LeBron and Kyrie.

I mean we're literally looking at a team going on a dominant run where it drafted three of its 5 starters that are currently all-stars.

Is it the rule or the exception to the rule?

The heat went on a big run with very few recent draft picks as part of their core.

It's almost like there's multiple ways to build a team and sometimes you do it via free agency, trades, drafting or *gasp* all three!

Well generally you either have the culture to attract big name players or you need to find an all star from somewhere (draft, trade, FA). As it seems to be nowadays you have to already have a star player in order for any other star player / fringe star to even consider coming to you.

It's why so many teams get mired in NBA hell. Not good enough to do anything or attract big players but not bad enough to get the top picks for potential stars. Well that or terrible management / bad picks.

The word out here is that the Celtics want Isaac. I get the feeling we'll see the Celtics trade one more time.

I also feel like Porzingis is a hoax but also won't be surprised if he gets traded for less than he is worth in a "why didn't we trade for him" sort of way.

as fun as the offseason has been it really feels like it won't matter unless Durant gets hurt for the postseason.

GSW's offseason could leave its bench insanely thin. if shaun livingston and iggy walk, then it becomes a 4-man team. best top 4 in the league by a good margin, but 5-10 of that roster becomes real bad.

imo Iggy isn't going anywhere. GSW can pay him any amount needed to keep him due to Durant's exception deal. If other teams want him, it just ups his leverage. There is no replacing Iggy if he leaves. But if he leaves, he'll have to start and not play with elite players and not win championships in the back 9 of his career. They'll find a compromise.

i definitely don't think iggy *should* leave, but there were reports. that said, he's 33 and injury-prone now. 33 or 34 is the age where shane battier (the best non-big-3 miami player) fell off a cliff.

and lmao @ aldridge fetching a top 10

I imagine the reports are floated out by his agent, because as Durant opts out, GSW can pay any amount they can stomach to Iggy.

Kings interested in a swap of the #10 pick and Afflalo's non-guaranteed pick for Andre Drummond.

I'm as frustrated with Drummond as anyone but this seems really selling low, and the Kings going from one big man with character issues to one with motor issues would be the most Kings thing ever.
