I don't think anyone who has played both games believes Mario 64 is better than BK

The only elements I think Mario 64 does better are that the running and jumping are a little more fun to control, a little faster and more nimble. They would be better controls than BK's for a "pure" platforming game, but the problem is that it isn't one.

I suppose if you don't like Collect-a-thons, you wouldn't like BK as much as SM64. Both games do this, but BK really hammers it on with the Jiggies and the Notes and the Jinjos...

I liked Mario 64 more. There were a nice variety of missions to do in each stage and BK had too much collecting for my taste.

Oh noes! A different opinion that doesn't affect you in any way, shape or form! How ever will you cope?!

Is your life so safe that this is your biggest concern?

But BK doesn't even have as much stuff to collect as SM64. 100 jiggies vs. 120 stars. 900 notes vs. 100 coins x 15 levels. 5 Jinjos vs. 8 red coins. Not to mention it's much less tedious in BK since you don't have to exit the level each time you get a jiggy, and the notes directly influence your progress in comparison to coins only having significance once you collect 100.

SM64 is definitely very generous, only requiring 70 stars out of 120 to beat the game. I don't know the exact numbers for BK, but I'm sure you need to collect more to make minimum progress. However, when I think about the 70 star number now, is that really a good thing? It strikes me as not very confident of Nintendo to only demand 60% of the game be completed to beat it.

Did you need to collect 100 coins in each level of SM64? It's been too long since I've played it, but I thought they were just there as health pickups. Maybe in the remake for the DS?

I suppose now that you mention it, they were pretty equal on objects to collect. There were the Mumbo tokens that you needed for transformations, though...

Yup, there was a star for 100 coin collection on the N64 version.

To the TC, SM64 was great back in the day, but it has NOT aged very well at all, and BK is fundamentally far better. Of course, I'm also a big fan of collect-a-thons, sooo...

My reasoning. Hate collection quests in games. It's a cheap way to extend a game's play time.

I'm aware Mario 64 has it as well, it just felt more tedious in BK. I also seem to remember having issues finding stuff in BK, and that's when I lose patience. If I have to use a guide, what's the point?

I'm playing BK for the first time right now (just got everything in Freezeezy whatever, except for the one Jigsaw piece you need the special shoes for), and, yeah, it's better than SM64. The camera still is awful (hey look! I just got hit because my entire screen is filled by a wall I can't rotate the camera away from!), but it's worlds better than SM64's. The ONLY thing SM64 did better is its hub isn't a convoluted mess.

Not really the case with these games. The maps are specifically designed for collecting these items. Collecting the items is fundamentally what makes the game what it is and is meant to utilize the map and the power ups you get. You know exactly what you're meant to get when you enter the map and generally are lead to where it is.

The only time I would say it was bad was in Jet Force Gemini. Locking half the game away until you find every single hidden Tribal. No guidance, just one big Easter egg hunt. Now that was a chore.

That's what I came in to say. When I go back and play Mario 64, I spend more time goofing off running and jumping around doing nothing, because moving around is a lot more fun. When I play Banjo, I don't goof off at all really because moving around isn't that fun on its own, but playing the actual levels and collecting things is more fun. In the end I gotta give it to Banjo because of that.
