No, the game industry is noticeably different and less excuting and organic than it was even at the start of the decade.

I agree that a lot of us are just older and bitter. The E3 isn't changing, we are.

Yeah, TC. I guess we got hyped for things like Smash Bros. and new Zelda games back in the day only because we were younger. Not at all because it's far superior to things like Final Fantasy Fishing.

No, they just keep churning more and more resources into generic AAA garbage. Big Western developers are a joke nowadays.

the cycle of acquisitions has caused the number of independent entities to drop, and the ones that remain prioritize shareholder value over creativity/appeal to longtime customers.

you're not wrong that we were probably more naive a decade ago, but it is also true that the entities present have taken more targeted approaches at their core audience (which is NOT us)

anytime you see the number of participants in a marketplace drop, the end product is more polished and less creative. it runs against the nature of business as we understand it, but modern economies have torn down the smithian economic theory that as businesses grow too large they become unwieldy and unable to compete; instead we now see that they actually grow stronger and more capable of consuming all new competitors rapidly.

risk-averse behavior when it comes to investing doesn't pay off well, but when it comes to producing a consumer product, it apparently does.

rant incoming

after the success of CoD4 and then Modern Warfare 2, game companies finally captured the elusive "casual gamer" market they had been chasing for like 20 years (the kinds of guys who aren't hardcore about games but are into them the way people consume summer blockbuster movies).

pretty soon the vast majority of games were released to cater to this mass market of gamers, since it finally gives companies the returns they want. this results in a bunch of games that feel very homogeneous and same-y, are never really difficult or challenging, are extremely streamlined, etc. There's a huge focus on making you "feel" like you are doing more than you are (i.e. when you press 1 button in Assassin's Creed and do some crazy backflip combo). Stories are now attempting to be movie equivalents, with focuses on emotion, diversity, etc (not bad in and of itself, but dillutes the identity of the medium imo).

games these days basically feel like they're made in a boardroom. they're created by execs who put millions into market research, they're over-engineered so that there is never really any kind of learning curve, way to fail, or nuance, and then the icing on the cake is that they are slowly being transitioned towards becoming a service thanks to DLC/microtransactions/etc.

it's just not the same IMO. i think the passion for video games is mostly not there with like 99% of games that come out each year.

No, they didn't show enough games that we didn't already know about. And a lot of the stuff they did show isn't coming out until next year

I think I can see your point here, at least as far as consoles are concerned. There are still a lot of PC games coming out that don't cater to the summer blockbuster casual crowd

this is a really good summation of what is now described as the "core gamer" market

i feel like "casual gamer" is often used to refer to people who play wii sports for 5 minutes

but that is what makes it feel even more alienating to older people who game a lot--what we thought of as 'casuals' are now the core market, the 'casuals' are people whose gaming tastes have zero overlap with ours, and we are mostly not being targeted with modern releases by the big companies. i'm ok with this, it makes my hobby cheaper.

mostly from small independent developers. mostly not at E3.

yea agreed

the thing is, ive been playing video games for like 20 years and im accustomed to the concept of AAA games being the good ones i want to play. metroid, final fantasy, metal gear solid, etc

so i guess i am kind of used to the idea that i can just buy the next playstation and play a handful of games from a big company with a solid dev team, and it will be good, even though this hasn't been the case for like ten years now. but old habits die hard unfortunately.

ive looked into some indie games but i cant get into the majority of them. i have no interest in the "artsy" games and i find the retro throwback style games too derivative. i recently bought hollow knight and that game is kind of neat
