People not being able to use their created characters 50% of the time would annoy people. The developers decided player freedom was better than accuracy. To a lot of people they'd rather have this than a 'historically accurate multiplayer game' If people can't choose their race and gender and can't make custom emblems (and all the other silly stuff they throw into multi) they might stick to the older CODs. If people can be customize what they want on the Allied team but can't on the Axis people won't want to play as that team. Not sure why shooting some black female Axis soldier in a silly multiplayer match is going to ruin the game for you. Now flash forward a year or two and CoD, which is arguably known for being even less realistic and authentic than BF1 (is that even arguable really? especially modern CoD.) And they're taking liberties with shit just to give you character options in the multiplayer and not take the multiplayer overly serious. Now people are freaking out about that not being authentic and shit.
