At this point the risk of global nuclear annihilation actually seems more like a quaint idea than a realistic threat. There are plenty of other ways we're far more likely to kill ourselves off.

Potentially not, but the odds of multiple nations firing off multiple warheads at multiple targets grows lower and lower all the time, and even if you assume that terrorists might get their hands on a bomb and use it it wouldn't generate the necessary chain reaction you'd need to really end the human race.

If you want to wipe out mankind, the smart money these days is probably betting on some sort of germ warfare or accidental epidemic to take us all out bubonic plague style. Secondary odds might be for a more long-term shift in global climate that makes enough of the Earth uninhabitable, but we've got a lot of tech for compensating for that sort of thing, so we might actually be able to survive that, even if our way of life as a whole radically changed (and a LOT of people got purged along the way).

The long shot might be for some sort of solar event or cosmic catastrophe to wipe us out a la the dinosaurs, but that might give us a time frame of millions of years to work with.

No, the cold nuclear war probably won't go on forever but we'll screw up the environment way before anyone gets a chance to push the button.

You said "mankind" and then "nation". No, nation. Yes, mankind. Because of all the Tardis' that actually believe what the media and government says is true.

It might surprise you, but there have been significant advances and a significant increase in the number of countries with nuclear weapons since 1945
