Teaching is the lowest end of the middle class spectrum depending on your area. You get enough to cover living expenses and a few luxuries, but rarely more. Many teachers in Louisiana commute 20-30 minutes to work to make more money by working in higher paying parishes.

I remember a lot of my teachers paid for things out of pocket because the school board didn't cover it, like duotangs, extra workbooks when a student filled theirs up, and binders. That stuff isn't too expensive, but I feel like it'd add up over time. That's not counting extra "fun" stuff they might plan as well.

Teachers where I work (Toronto) work 9-3 M-F and get two months vacation a year, as well as Christmas break, March break etc and get paid high five figures or 6 figures.

They deserve what the OP is making, probably even less

Oh, and I forgot to mention that the job is basically glorified babysitting

All depends on where you end up teaching. My mom used to make 60k a year teaching kids convicted of felonies which is pretty damn good considering that's nearly double the average household income in her area.

But she wanted to go back to public school for various reasons so now I think she makes about 45k still living in the same area. Not bad, but not great either for someone with nearly 20 years of experience.

Of course I also remember when she started out at like 20k a year. So obviously it's the kind of thing that you have to put some years into if you want to move up the ladder.

That depends on the district, but in general, you're wrong. You're paid salary, not by the hour. Just because you have a couple months where you don't work doesn't mean you're unemployed.

A 40k salary where you work ~1700 hours a year is still an arguably better gig than a 40k salary where you work ~2000 hours a year.

Depends on the district. I'm getting paid for teaching right now even though it's summer vacation as per my contract, and bartending on the side for extra cash.

You're paid 9 months, but you can choose to have it distributed over 12 months. So technically he's right when he says summers are unpaid vacations. 12 month employees like Ag teachers and, with the exception of a few states,SPED teachers make more than the others because they are typically still working with kids during the summer months.

Who in the fuck makes that? Unless you live where they tax 50% of an income over a certain amount that is not a reflection of what US teachers make.

That's per year prorated for a 10 month working period.

That's how teachers try and mislead you. "I don't get paid for 2 months". So you need to spread their annual salary over a 10 month period, and it's actually more than it seems.

I am a teacher, and I can assure you that our salaries are not that comfortable. I make 40k a year in ten months and that's barely enough to make ends meet with a family. And couple that with being a coach, I spend 60-70 hours working and am compensated very little. Teacher salaries are not on par with lawyers and doctors. Janitors do less work and make as much as I do.
