While I would be okay with faster and slightly more aggressive gameplay, wavedashing isn't needed, and once-only air dodges would ruin some characters, notably Little Mac, who already has enough trouble recovering.

Some special moves can only be used once in the air, but they don't put you into a fall state. How would you feel about treating dodges like that instead?

If they made a truly competitive fifth game, it would kill Sm4sh and probably reduce the influx of new players to Melee, so it could perhaps work. Additionally, I believe Sm4sh was supposed to be Sakurai's last game, and AFAIK he plays a big role in the game not being as competitive as it could be.

Wavedashing is an entire movement option and adds a TON of depth to the game. It's so important that if you can't wavedash, you can't play competitive Melee. Just make it an official aspect of the game and balance characters to it. It doesn't still have to be done by dodging into the ground.

Mac is awful in the air whether he has infinite air dodges or not. And he's already bottom tier, it isn't like he's good but on the edge of bad. If it really is that bad in testing, make his aerials a bit better at defending or make his recovery moves stronger.

It adds a ton of depth, but it also creates another barrier to entry for casuals to enjoy top level play. Remember, Smash Bros is an entry level fighting game, there's a limit to how much you can raise the skill ceiling until you pass a threshold where people look at the top competitors and think to themselves "I can't ever reach that level so why bother".

Melee flew past that threshold and was criticized for this, hence the reason why Sakurai went way over the top in casualizing Brawl.

That's not how that works. Depth of mechanics isn't an entry barrier. Smash won't become indecephirable just because you can do a standing slide.

I don't play Melee specifically because the tech barrier combined with the GCN controller hurts my hands. There's also the problem of controllers themselves being uneven.

People gave Armada shit for dropping from a tournament over his controller, but people outside of Melee don't seem to understand how integral a perfect controller is to top level gameplay and how much money pros spend getting one. Until they resolve this, I'm not competing, but thankfully Hax$ has drawn attention and now there's a lot of support for modding controllers to all have a simpler code that makes them uniform so this stops being a problem.

But that is how it works. Else Sakurai would have gone back to the Melee mechanics for Smash 4 instead of putting it smack dab in the middle of Brawl and Melee in terms of gameplay speed.
