My sister is an anti-vaxxer. She's also a massive stoner, says things like "there are as many genders as people have names for", will turn any conversation towards talking about how religion is bullshit(but says she's a Satanist), says she "doesn't believe in other planets"(and no, I have no fucking idea what that means. I will not ask.), and is generally an all-around garbage person who still lives with my parents.

So, yeah. Those people need to be purged.

I just recently saw a story on Facebook about a mother who's daughter was unable to get vaccined, and a non-vaccinated child got a disease and passed it to the daughter. The picture was the daughter in the hospital and the text was refuting the "point" anti-vaxxers make of "if your vaccinated, why are you worried about my unvaccinated kid?" Because some people can't be vaccinated for various reasons. Plus vaccines aren't 100% effective.

The comments to this status were tons of anti-vaxxers saying don't trust the government, I know what's best for my kid, I never got vaccinated and I'm fine, and I vaccinated once before and got a side effect (just like all medicine has), therefore vaccines are harmful, not helpful.

I actually had an employee who was a 9/11 denier. Not a truther, but denier. He straight up thought that it didn't happen and the twin towers never existed. He was also 100% serious and would constantly talk about a ton of other conspiracy shit.

It's worse than that. The main problem is this thing called Herd Immunity.

Every disease has an infection rate. Basically it's how many people is each infected person going to infect (on average obviously).

So if the rate is .5 it means every two people who have the disease infect a third. If it's 1.5 it means every two people infect 3 others.

As you may imagine, numbers BELOW 1 are diseases that die out on their own. They are diseases that, while the individual may be at risk, we, as a group, are immune to it. That's herd immunity.

Infection rates above 1 are terrible. Basically an epidemic.

A vaccine's primary job isn't to make the individual immune. That's a means to an end. The purpose is to make the SOCIETY immune.

Interestingly enough this means that the less effective the vaccine is, the more people need to take it in order to push the infection rate down below 1.

And it also means that, yes, not vaccinating your kid is, in some minor way, endangering the whole community.
