Only if you're counting the sheer volume of pathetic drivel that comes from most indie developers and places like Steam Greenlight.

Crash has always been among the most basic and frankly shallow gaming experiences you can have.

It's probably the most successful 3d platformer. Made use of the 3 dimensions without destroying the core platforming gameplay.

So...you've never heard of Mario before, then? Mario 64 very nearly doubled the sales of Crash 1, and about 4 million more sales than any Crash game.

Crash was a second-rate platformer right from the very start.

I haven't played a Nintendo console in years. I've always preferred PlayStation. But it doesn't take a genius to see that Crash was a pathetic joke compared to Mario 64 back then. And the sales numbers make it abundantly clear that the vast majority of gamers agreed.

The platforming elements of Mario 64 were slow and clunky. The game played more like an adventure game than a platformer. It was more like an adventure game with platforming elements.

Crash Bandicoot games maintained the speed and smoothness of a traditional platformer. The game had flow.

It's a case of two styles in the genre. Mario 64 was more open with it's level design and encouraged not being straightforward with reaching the goal or Power Star in this case. Crash was far more traditional in comparison. Straightforward levels and a hefty amount of challenging platforming to boot. Most of the praise Mario 64 got was because of it being the first true 3D plat former. While still good, it's controls have aged more than Crash has.

So what you're saying is that Crash is more basic and shallow (as I said earlier) and that's why it's better? lol

Think about it for a second. You're actually claiming that the fact there were multiple ways to use your numerous platforming abilities (which were objectively better than Crash's) in order to get to your goal in Mario 64 makes it worse. And that Crash is a better platformer because it essentially boils down to "run forward and jump."

Also, the controls haven't "aged" in Mario 64. The only reason people feel a significant difference is because the improvements in analog sticks have been far more noticeable than the improvements in the D-pad (which has been basically static for decades). So when you go back, you feel like the controls aren't as responsive. But that's not at all true. That would be like playing Halo on XBox when it originally released, switching to a PC with KB&M for 20 years, and then complaining that "the controls aged and they suck now" when you go back and plug in your XBox for some Halo fun with your buddies. The controls are fine. You changed.

Really, the Crash games are honestly kinda dated, because they have this awkward design where they're using 3D, though they're mostly 2D games with an altered perspective, functionally. There's a reason the creators named their conceptualization for it "Sonic's Ass".

Crash 2 is one of the best platformers of all time and still holds up quite fluidly today. It had awesome level design, great variety in levels, and a bunch of awesome secrets that were quite smart for their time. Nostalgia isn't a factor here
