I enjoy that stuff but not so much with perspective characters. I like to see it sometimes in expansive worlds but it's a lot harder for me to get into stuff when it's the core of the protagonist themselves.

I'm waiting on final word about a newspaper internship I might be getting, which would be amazing but would take me away from here for a few months again if it happens. If it doesn't, I'll dive back in. But if it does, I should probably wait and restart. I could probably rush it, but if it happens I'll have a few weeks before I leave and I'd rather rush Symphonia with Leon so that isn't backburner jokes all over again. (This is all a pretty new development.)

all this talk of unlikable protagonists makes me wonder how Leon is still watching Attack on Titan

I just finished rewatching season 1 and yikes

Eren is so often out of focus that it's easy to forget he's the protagonist. Plus, I think he's so over the top with his rage that it becomes comical rather than a turnoff. I don't really take him that seriously most of the time. They really made it work in his favor a couple of episodes ago though, which really impressed me.

The tragic fallen hero trope is great for a villain! Not so much for a hero. It occasionally works though. Big Boss is one of my absolute favorite characters in anything, and his fall from grace is fascinating. He's very heroic in MGS3 though, and most of his villainy is from Snake's perspective. Big Boss is the way to do it right. Take the control away from him once he stops being the hero.

If the hero struggles with inner demons but eventually wins, that works, too. I don't want my heroes to be well intentioned extremists or "the end justifies the means" types. I fundamentally disagree with those philosophies and so I don't want them in my heroes.

Renton in Eureka Seven is another weird exception. He fits the hotblooded shounen hero mold, but this show is so absurd that I end up liking him anyway. He's nowhere near my favorite character in the show though, so in instances where the hero isn't my favorite, it better have a strong supporting cast to compensate, which both Attack on Titan and Eureka Seven do.

Although I couldn't get into Gurren Lagann despite it being over the top. Kamina is too bad and the supporting cast isn't good enough.

Deconstruction of the Marvel Galaxy rewatched. I'll post a review tomorrow. The sequel's only out in theaters for like two or three more days so I dunno what we'll do about that; maybe we'll go slightly out of order and catch that or maybe we'll just not watch it this go-around.

Finished Guardians of the Galaxy. The movie is undeniably charming, and I love the trope of the ragtag bunch of misfits growing into the heroic team, so this hit on a lot of levels for me. Perhaps the best comedy of any of the movies so far, too.

Winter Soldier > Avengers > Guardians of the Galaxy > Captain America > Iron Man >= Iron Man 2 >= Iron Man 3 > Thor > Dark World > Incredible Hulk

Also, we finished another round of anime earlier, but I didn't post anything about it at the time.

We're hitting the final push in Kanon, and it's kind of amazing rewatching this to realize how much Akiko knew from the very beginning. Also, I've been waiting to reveal this since episode 1, but the very first thing Jeff Zero said upon seeing Ayu for the first time: "Are you a ghost?" So great.

Eureka Seven floors me because Dewey actually did something. It only took 39 episodes for the main villain to take an action of consequence, but hey, welcome to the party, dude! Finally getting the backstory on Adroc was good, too.

We get a very strong Akane-centric episode of Psycho-Pass as she starts coming into her own as a detective and she stares down the truth of the Sibyl System.

You're 39 episodes into Eureka Seven? Huh, I thought episode 39 was one that would draw a different comment. Maybe I'm thinking of episode 40? Or I'm just wrong! Either way, you're coming up on the best of the show IMO. (Not episode 39/40, but the last couple of episodes)

I tried to beat Trails 3 Chapter 6 but this chapter refuses to end so I failed in my mission. I'm pretty sure I'm right at the end though so presumably next time I play I'll get there. Should have a lot to talk about, albeit a lot under spoilers but I'll try my best to get as much not-spoiler talk as I can.

Fate/Zero is great

The main character is not really heroic, but the show also doesn't really have a main character to the extent that most shows do. Of the other people that have main-characterish roles there's one I'm pretty sure Leon would really like.

I'd give it a chance!

Also I'll drop my standard plug for Monster (which has a great main character who is definitely heroic).

To me that makes it more likely I had the episode wrong!

I checked Wikipedia for episode summaries though and the one I'm talking about is Episode 39. Your description sounds like what it has for episode 38.

What I'm talking about is (Episode 39): How a soccer game breaks out..

I also thought Dewey acted earlier than he did apparently though so I can't be trusted.

Yui > Yukino > Hiratsuka > Haruno > Isshiki > Meguro > Saki > Rumi > Ebina > Komachi > Kaori > Miura > Minami

Rumi is the cutoff line for "good characters."

Anyway, yeah, we just finished Age of Ultron. I'm debating on whether to rank it ahead of the original Avengers or not, but it's neck and neck either way. Here's a weird factor into the equation that (probably) only applies to me: When I was younger, I read an FFVIII fanfic where there was a character who could make someone's worst nightmare manifest in their minds and they would think it was real (It was a derivation of Ellone's ability, for those of you who've played FFVIII), so for the first part of the movie, I was reminded of that fanfic and got me feeling all nostalgic about it. Good times.

Let's...tentatively roll with this:

Winter Soldier > Age of Ultron >= Avengers > Guardians of the Galaxy > Captain America > Iron Man >= Iron Man 2 >= Iron Man 3 > Thor > Dark World > Incredible Hulk

I feel bad having all the Iron Man movies so low, but the MCU is proving to be quite good.

I didn't particularly like either Avengers movie!

The first one had good dialogue (as with most Whedon projects), but it felt like it didn't really have much of a plot beyond "all of these guys are going to clash because they have huge egos, and then they'll make up in the end to save the day." Then the second one was just boring imo.

Guardians might be my favorite Marvel movie, though; glad you enjoyed that one.

because that means there's the potential that Yui gets shut out and left behind, and I don't feel like that's what the series is aiming for with the three of them

I mean, they could somehow make it work with Yui being the tag-along friend or whatever, I guess, but it'd be hard

that's what they made a VN for

so everyone could pick their favorite ship and headcanon it

I'm totally fine with Hikigaya and Yukino ending up together. I'm not one of those people who hates the rival simply because she's the rival. I just don't want Yui being left in the dust as a result.

Guardians might be my favorite Marvel movie, though; glad you enjoyed that one.

I've noticed the Guardians movies tend to score really well across the board but especially well with folks who don't care as much for other MCU content, especially The Avengers films. James Gunn's stylistic approach is just so separate. The cosmic side of the equation is in good hands with him at the helm; I'm glad he's staying on board creatively after Guardians 3.

Oh right, forgot to mention that I finished Heaven in P4G earlier. I dislike the fact that the music restarts from the beginning every time you initiate a battle in dungeons. You just have to stand still and do nothing to hear the full song here. Also maxed out Yosuke's S. Link the day after, which felt kinda fitting! Still working on Kanji's, Rise's, and Naoto's, as they're all around ranks 3-6. I'm doing fairly well on all the ones I haven't maxed yet except for the day care one. I always forget that one exists until I have no other options for a day, and it's not very good anyway.
