you have to communicate with people when they're at their most emotionally unstable and most likely have other lives in the palms of your hands. really frightening.

I think it's probably harder to be the cop who actually gets to that place in person

There's no way in hell I could be a 911 operator.

Well, I guess I could be one, but... There's no way in hell I'd voluntarily do that kind of job.

Those types of calls are supposedly very rare. From what I've read, it's mostly noise complaints and people calling 911 because facebook is down.(No, seriously.)

The was a 911 operator who used to post on LUE about all the crazy shit people would call 911 over.

The actual 911 worthy calls are extremely rare. People will call 911 over stupid shit all the time, like their toilet is overflowing. But the "help! He's beating me! Send someone" calls are extremely rare.

I worked as a dispatcher part time while I was in college.

There were rarely ever 911 calls and most were just 'accidents' when people hit the emergency buttons on campus. Other times people will be too scared to call 911 so they call a non emergency line. I remember one time a guy called because the sprinklers wouldn't shut off.

Most of the time the dispatchers are probably just watching something on Netflix, but they also have to handle many other radio channels at the same time so it can either be really busy or be completely dead.

Maybe, I was the cop. I've posted about stupid calls I've had to go on all the time on LUE.

Our dispatchers watched TV and played on Facebook most of the time. But, in all honesty, there really wasn't much else to do.

being able to guide and ease someone when you're there physically is a lot easier than having to do it over the phone.

I think paramedics have it harder in that aspect. They literally see people mutilated, bleeding, and dying as part of their job.

it's also a lot easier to handle these people over the phone rather than physically

They also have to deal with assholes that shoot at anything with flashing lights and other assholes that will steal anything that isn't nailed down.
