My car has been in the shop since Thursday, and I've had to rely on my parents to get around, which of course means relying on their schedules. Today I have to wait two hours in the cafeteria for my classes to start, because there was no other time I could be dropped off.

They can't fix my car fast enough.

Public Transit.

That's because you've never had to live without one. It's like most things -- life is harder but not impossible without a car. You just get used to certain inconveniences, bring your hobbies with you if there's gonna be a lengthy wait (books, ahoy) and try to focus on the silver lining: more [forced] cardio. :P

I lived here off and on for a cumulative 12 years, all without a car. I relied on this, the worst-ranked metro public transit system. It's difficult but not impossible if there are no viable alternatives.

I'm surprised LA's is so bad, though!

Well, it should be noted that I'm staying with my parents because of the lack of a car, and the house they live in is four miles from the nearest bus stop, so I couldn't take a bus even if I wanted to. Though I could take the bus from my apartment, which is a bit more convenient, but then I'd have no way to get around to specific places I need to go that aren't near the bus stop, so it's a bit of a tradeoff.

No joke, I went to New York City once and had to walk about five miles over the course of a summer day because my friend's friend was showing us around (she lives in NYC), and I was completely spent by the end of it.

yeah, that's why you walk to the bus stop and let the bus take you you to your destination instead of walking to your destination.

walking 4 miles should be doable if you're not completely out of shape. it's not very convenient, sure, but it shouldn't be impossible.

Maybe I suck, but walking four miles in 95 degree weather to and from school does not sound appealing to me.

yeah its not technically IMPOSSIBLE to get around without a car but it certainly sucks ass in most areas of the us. particularly in the summer in hot places or the winter in cold places. like walking 4 miles isn't a big deal but try walking 4 miles in 120 degree heat in phoenix in the summer. besides it destroying your skin you will be insanely dehydrated and tired no matter how good shape you are in.

yes because we built our cities and infrastructure around everyone having a car

if we planned more urban cities with robust public transportation rather than suburban sprawl, not having a car wouldn't be a problem

lived in south korea and never drove a car the entire time and getting around was very easy

how convenient having a car is also depends on how much you like driving. i don't HATE it but i'm certainly not a fan of it, so public transit all the way for me.

again, if i lived in a place with shit public transit i'd probably prefer driving, but luckily i don't.

When I lived abroad, I learned that needing a car to get anywhere was quite an 'Americanism'. I mean, I kinda knew it's very commonplace in the US, but then going to another country for a few years and experiencing it firsthand put owning and requiring a car to get anywhere into perspective.

I also love driving, but I also loved not needing to drive. Although it helped that Prague has an amazing metro and tram system - cheap, efficient, clean, and always on time. Definitely the best I've ever had to use.

If it's anything more than 1, some form of transport is preferred. Even a bike.

I don't even need a car because I take the bus to and from work and can walk to bus stops for other routes a mile away now that I'm in shape. We only have one bus system here and it has extensive coverage.

However, you live in LA. That answers your question. You CAN'T live without a car in LA, because public transit is overpriced and inefficient given the 80 different bus lines, the area is massive, and the culture in general requires it. Where I live, you can live without a car just fine.
