These days you pay more in property taxes in a year if you own a home than a years worth of rent for an upscale apartment

L-O-fucking-L, not true at all. My property tax for the year was $766. That's like half a months rent at an upscale apartment.

Where I live you're easily paying over $4000 a year for a semi-detached

You're right. A fair comparison would be mortgage/bills/repairs vs. Rent/bills, as those are the truly comparable costs when it comes to accommodations.

I'd say more like rent/utilities vs mortgage/taxes/repairs/insurance/utilities/maintenance

Is a more apples to apples comparison.

Taxes, insurance, utilities aren't bills? How is maintenance different from repairs?

Didn't know what you meant by "bills". If that's what you mean by bills then thats fine, but I don't see why we couldn't call them all out separately so people actually know what they are getting into. I also forgot to add "HOA fee" to that list.

There is a difference to maintenance and repairs. I think of maintenance like upkeep or preventative type of work. Yard work or pest control for example.

Repairs I think of as "X broke down and now we have to fix it"

Yea fair enough, but if you honestly believe that you aren't paying all the extra things that a home owner pays when you rent from them you are naive.

Oh no trust me, I'm more than aware that ultimately as a renter you pay for these things. Especially considering it's the business that I'm in. Only thing I'm trying to point out is how people often say things like "Well I'm paying $1,110 a month in rent and I could be paying $1,100 in a mortgage!!". Often times they are comparing the cost of the rent to directly to the cost of the mortgage (and MAYBE sometimes the insurance and taxes if they are included in the mortgage.) but they are leaving out the cost of those other things, so it's not apples to apples. The cost of those other things that I mentioned are lumped into the rent payment and it's not the case for the mortgage, yet they are expenses that need to be considered.
