Two California families are putting the blame on the hit Netflix show “13 Reasons Why” for the recent suicides of their teenage daughters, according to a report.

The young girls, Bella Herndon and Priscilla Chui — both 15 — took their lives just days after watching the controversial show that tells the story of a teenage schoolgirl who commits suicide and leaves behind a box of pre-recorded cassette tapes explaining why to the people who have hurt her, Fox affiliate KTVU-TV reported.

The devastated families of the girls, who did not know each other and attended different high schools, say the show had triggered the teens.

“It’s very graphic, especially the two-minute scene where she slits her wrists in a bathtub,” Priscilla’s uncle Peter Chui told the news outlet.

Priscilla, a San Mateo resident, had attended Aragon High School and lived with her uncle before she hanged herself.

“She was precocious. She’s very determined,” Peter Chui said.

Recalling the day she took her life, the uncle said, “I just remember her brother running out and screaming, ‘Priscilla hung herself!’ We took her down, called 911, tried to do what we could … CPR, but it was pretty obvious. She was cold.”

Priscilla had struggled with depression, according to Peter Chui, who noted that her grades had also plummeted.

Commenting on “13 Reasons Why,” Peter Chui said, “I feel it’s dangerous for that small percentage of young adults who the show can become a trigger for them and I feel as if the show gives only one alternative for cyberbullying and other teenage issues.”

Commenting on “13 Reasons Why,” Peter Chui said, “I feel it’s dangerous for that small percentage of young adults who the show can become a trigger for them and I feel as if the show gives only one alternative for cyberbullying and other teenage issues.”

Bella, of Livermore, also hanged herself. Her mother, Donna, found her dead inside the family home three days before the girl’s 16th birthday.

“All I could see is that she was on her knees bent over, like she was digging in the closet. I thought she was joking around ‘cause there’s really nothing to find in her closet,” Donna told the news outlet. “So I laughed and said, ‘Hey Bella, what are you doing?’ And then I got closer and she had hung herself. She was so blue.”

The teen’s father wound up cutting down Bella, who was on life support for a week-and-a-half before she was taken off.
Bella, a sophomore at Livermore Valley Charter Prep School, was a straight-A student who had battled depression in middle school after being bullied, her family said.

But in the weeks before she took her life, she was doing better, according to her parents.

“She was doing great. We put her in a new school. She had new friends. They were coming over. She was interacting with them, it was very positive,” her mother said.

The teenager’s father, John Herndon, is pleading for Netflix to not release a second season of the show.

“Don’t go through with the renewal for the second season of ‘13 Reasons Why.’ Stop this. This is wrong. You’re making money off the misery of others,” he said.

The popular show has been controversial since its release for its depiction of suicide.

Netflix said in a statement to KTVU: “Our hearts go out to these families during this difficult time. We have heard from many viewers that ’13 Reasons Why’ has opened up a dialogue among parents, teens, schools and mental health advocates around the difficult topics depicted in the show. We took extra precautions to alert viewers to the nature of the content and created a global website to help people find local mental health resources.”

Two families are blaming the show 13 Reasons Why for their daughters suicides. Both girls took their lives just days after watching the show. There is your rough summary.

Yes, I am obsessed with the show enough to make a second topic.

No one is arguing that. They're saying it's dangerous to that small percentage of people who are already having suicidal thoughts.

I have no problem with the show as entertainment and I loved watching it, however I do have a problem with producers of the show saying they talked to suicide prevention specialists when they clearly didn't. Almost every professional who has commented on the show has laid out a list of things they did wrong and said it was dangerous.

That's like blaming video games because a child shot up a school. They were after all susceptible to committing violence and then video games were thrown into the mix. Never mind that the parent failed in their supervision of their child and what type of media they were letting them be exposed to in their home.

I can totally see how the show, which does sort of romanticize suicide as a way to get revenge on those who wronged you, could cause someone who is already considering suicide to attempt to act. That said, you have grieving parents who are just trying to find anyway they can to rationalize what has happened to their daughter. They are trying to grab whatever answer they can.

Wait really. Wtf. Also isn't the second season supposed to be about teenage shooters instead of suicide (Though I guess suicide would be tied in considering that's the way many go out)

The irony is, there isn't. Her mother and father, Clyde to, and tony to the lesser extent. Everyone else is negatively impacted by the role they contributed towards killing her. Most only care for selfish reasons, and choose to not even bring the nasty fucking truth to light to save their own sorry asses.

So first off 13 reasons is a shitty show with unlikable characters (especially the chick that kills herself).

I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that seeing it in the petty revenge way they portray suicide might influence people already considering it.

But what's the craziest to me is the one girl went to aragon.. I work in San Mateo. My first girlfriend went to aragon (years ago). My cousin graduated there a couple years ago. It's weird reading a story about people so close to home and I'm surprised I didn't see anything about this before now.
