The animation is stunningly good. The ToonBoom animation platform is amazing, I want season 8 animated this way.

As for the actual content...well...I feel better about it than before but I'm still not that sold. It's going to be non-canon to FiM so it doesn't feel like it's worth getting invested in.

To answer your question, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (Andrea Beaumont and her role as the Phantasm is made canon in Justice League).

However I wouldn't expect this movie to be canon, MLP isn't that sort of franchise. It'd be nice if they actually did something like Serenity where the audience's investment in the television show pays off when they watch the movie, though. Especially for a show like this one that has only lasted as long as it has (season 3 was the original proposed endpoint due to the 65-episode syndication cutoff, hence why it was shorter than any other season) because it's attracted such a diverse and expansive audience (much like what justified the creation of Serenity after Firefly's cancellation).

That said they did slip in enough fan references to where you won't feel like no one cares about what brought the franchise to this point.

Transformers: The Movie (the good one), GI Joe: The Movie, the Kids Next Door movies, all of the Pokemon movies...

The real problem is that most animated movies based on tv cartoons that AREN'T canon are based on shows that barely acknowledge canon as is, so it's just an extension of the pre-existing status quo. But cartoons where canon is actually recognized almost always extend that canon to a film if one gets made.

The real problem with MLP is the fact that they already have a history of multiple canon settings. The show from the 80s is not in-canon with Friendship is Magic, but they're both canon separately. Sort of in the same way that the Marvel movies and Marvel comics both have their own separate canon which is similar but isn't directly related.

Friendship Is Magic was a huge success, though, so odds are anything related to the overall franchise will be tied to it. And the movie is using mostly the same character designs and voice actresses, so odds are it will definitely be tied to it somewhat loosely.

That doesn't necessarily mean that the show will come back next season and reference things that happened in the movie (the way Transformers and GI Joe did), but that's less because it's out of canon and more because the show generally has looser continuity than that.
