Right now I'm thinking: 5 > 4 > 3 > 2 > 1 > 6. Haven't played Gen 7

Personally I think each Gen has been better then the last besides six which while not awful was kinda weak. There was just nothing memorable besides it adding fuel to the Mainline Pokemon is in Same Timeline as PMD theory

I think people tend to rate their first relatively higher than average, Diamond was basically the first game I ever played so I remember it fondly. Taking off my rose colored glasses I think I'd be okay with putting it below 3 and 2 as well, and also perhaps switch Gen 2 and 3 since Emerald was like the third game I ever played

Also wanted to say that I've never understood the myriad of hate that Gen 5 seems to often get. I've seen people bitch about the designs on a couple of the Pokemon and then call the whole thing garbage, but I feel like every Gen sans maybe 3 has had duds (and three actually added a very below average amount of Pokemon IIRC). I mean Gen 1 literally has a sentient thing of sewer sledge.

Like I once made a random comment on a ProtoMario vid where he said Gen 5 sucked or something saying this and he actually replied to me and basically said "But MUH CHANDELIER, GEN 5 = TRASH"

I have yet to try Gen 7 so my order for the others would probably be..... (based on length of time I've played them)

2, 3, 1, 6, 4, 5 ....maybe. Not going by best to worst, I like them all.

Honestly, they were all pretty enjoyable. Three had some map design issues and too many water Pokemon. Four and Five had some poorly designed and forgettable Pokemon. Seven was incredibly divisive and came off as a 'love it or hate it' sort of deal. But they were all still good games.

Pretty easy for me. 2 and 5 are above and beyond the best for good stories by Pokemon standards, lots of pokemon, and a shitton of post game and side content. 4 is a personal favorite of mine due to nostalgia, and with Platinum they have a lot of post game content as well. Then definitely gen 1. 7 and 3 can fight for the next spot (leaning towards 3) with 6 at the absolute bottom. 7 was actually pretty bad too in hindsight, so it definitely goes behind 3.

Four definitely takes heat for all those stupid new evolutions and ruining the Regi trio. And Arceus creating a lore conflict with Mew. It was awesome in the moment and it being crazy and mysterious to me since I was like seven and couldn't internet well. But now it seems super dumb to me. I also remember his movie sucking compared to Darkrai's.


And seriously, I can't remember a single thing from 6 besides the blow-up-the-world gun, AZ and his blossom Pokemon, and that horrendous-to-navigate Paris-like city. I don't remember a single town like I do of 5, a single gym like I do of 3 and 4, honestly I can barely remember the new Pokemon besides the starters. The legendaries were boring too honestly. Just feels like a really phoned in Gen. The Portable Ops of Pokemon

I base them based on my initial enjoyment.

I also agree that Gen V is horribly underrated thanks to the sketchy Pokemon designs. Gen IV is definitely the worst. Even with HG/SS, it felt dated as hell on the DS and everything was slow slow SLOW. Can't say that for R/S/E/FR/LG.

Gen 5 has so many Pokemon that it actually has more good Pokemon designs than every other generation. And even the ones that are considered the worst are not nearly as bad as they're portrayed. So I agree that Gen 5 is the best.

Gen 2 will always be special to me because it's where I started, but it did a lot of dumb things. Even though HG/SS improved upon it a bit, it's still not as good as it could have been. My main gripe with both GSC and HGSS is all the Gen 2 Pokemon that are unobtainable in Johto. That shit is inexcusable.

Also I'd rate Gen 6 highly solely because Kalos has such a fantastic variety of Pokemon available. Other than that, it doesn't have much going for it. Pokemon games need to have as many Pokemon available as possible. It's why I hate garbage like trade evolutions.

Just do the math between the last pokemon of the previous gen and the last pokemon of the current one:

The physical/special split was the most important change to happen to the game in term of battling. MegaEvo & Z-Moves don't even come close

and you're forgetting Gen 4 brought online features. Again, a massively important change.
