There's a good number of shitty parents in here.

Kids play with toys. If you aren't going to buy him barbies but you would buy your daughter barbies, you don't care about your child's best interests. If anything, your child may even grow up to hate you and I hope that happens.

What makes you think I would give my hypothetical future daughter any barbie dolls? If anything I would give her a chain sword... or a flame thrower.

I would not buy him Barbie. I also do not buy my daughter Barbie products when she asks. They are over priced, cheaply made products that are (at best) confusing when it comes to self-image. I do not want my children getting any more disadvantages when it comes to those kinds of issues.

I also don't buy action figures for the same reasons. We dobplay a lot of boardgames as a family. Chess, checkers, Settlers of Catan, Smashup, Dutch Blitz (card game), Zombie Dice, etc. The only "kid's" board game we play is Life. I won't allow Candy Land or Shoots & Ladders and their ilk in my home.

As a parent it's your job to protect your children even from themselves. I'm sure the kid will get over not getting a barbie much quicker than not making friends, being picked on, and that the memories of him outside having fun with his friends will be more so than me not buying him barbies.

I should have expected the responses disparaging myself and the parenting decisions of my spouse and I. All three of my children play the majority of games like I listed. My oldest is 9, my youngest is 5. We also encourage them to play video games that have similar focus (puzzle solving and teamwork). Games based on pure chance teach no useful lessons or traits that life doesn't teach them already. (Especially since lesser punishments are handle by dice rolls in our home.)

We are also not the most financially solvent home. So when presents are gifted to us, we accept them with grace. My children have dolls (targeted toward both genders), but we do nit buy them.

I would also like to point out to those who think less of me: my children want to play games with each other and their parents. We play chess multiple times a week. We have a family game night. We actually talk about things. My children love it.

I don't remember any toys my friends had when we were kids. I never really paid attention to that. The thought process of "Derek is cool and we're friends, but wait he has a barbie doll? Oh I don't wanna play football with him now." is weird to me.

I don't either but I'm sure I would if one of my friends had a barbie. It's not even something that maybe all kids would care about but it's a dumb toy that risks being ostracized. Better to just not have it and while I agree it can stay at home there's always that risk and I'd rather just not risk it or worry about it.

Along your same line of thinking I don't remember anything my parents didn't get me. If I had asked for a barbie and never got one I don't remember now. I would remember if I had a barbie and a friend found it and now I don't have friends.

As for the TC's question, I would tell him if other boys found out he wanted barbies he will probably get teased for wanting/playing with such things. As long as he was aware of the possible consequences I would buy him the barbies.

Because with your name, you have no place to speak. You can play and converse on public message boards named after a female anime child that repeats some made up sound, but you can't support a boy playing with a doll, even if in his own home and nothing more.

Why do you use Rika anyways? That is a name that should only be used by girls.

I think calling Mr the worst dad ever is both a stretch and an uncalled for slur. I argue that my own father is worse. Also, the Las Korean dictator, Kim UN or something. (I don't recall at the moment).

As for Candyland, I am firmly against games that are absolutely arbitrary and random. There is no strategy in that game. None at all. Life is a stretch, but it foes have choices that affect gameplay. Life has enough chaos as it is, I don't wish to encourage my children to believe that pure luck is a viable life strategy. (I also teach them to diversify interests and investments by trying to corner livestock in every game of Settlers we play).

The one argument I consistently hear about Candyland is that it teaches colors. Quirckle does so as well, and is better at it. Candyland is lazy design, and lazy gaming. I would also consider myself to be a lazy parent for allowing it played in my home.

God you're sound so utterly boring

Buying your boy a barbie is even more boring you contrarian clown

Hmm. No. That's letting a kid be a kid.

Forcing your kid to play Settlers of Catan with you is not.

Get him Barbies. Who the fuck cares?.

So far?

@MotaroRIP619
@Rika_Furude7
@TrollSlayer11
@FL81
And @Banana_Cyanide

But it's early days yet

They care about what gifts I get my hypothetical child? Creepy. What fucking interest do they have in my god damn son?

Actually, I don't give a fuck what you buy your kid. Seems like you care what I buy mine

I never forced. I didn't realize that that is what you thought. My apologies.

All three of my children have learned these games of their own volition.
