yeah man plus they only allow managers to clean it because of all the complicated parts that need to be disassembled i seen a manager fuck it up and instead of throwing the shake mix away they stored it in the towel buckets fuckin nasty!

The machines are super old because corporate/franchise owners are too cheap to replace them so they break down very frequently. They also have to be cleaned every week which is complicated, takes several hours, and will sometimes cause them to fail to work for the rest of the day.

I heard that they just don't want to spend the time to make the shake, sometimes. Don't know how true that is .

It would not be such a common thing if it was just cleaning.

I've heard that from several people in the food service industry.

This. Also they can lock up and go into heat mode for several hours which will cause them not to work. And yes, depending on what shift they will straight up lie. But in my experience, most of the time the machine is legit broken.

I worked at Wendy's and we'd have to take down the frosty machine for cleaning during the last hour of operation. At Taco Bell, our freeze machine can actually freeze up and not work for like 10 minutes or it fucks up altogether.

Tho I do admit I've lied and said the machine was down when asshole customers ask for them.

Yeah, but with those other places it has always been a handful of times it happens, but with McDonald's it seems to be every other week at least.

Their machines probably see more use, so they get dirtier or the parts are worn out

I've worked at one. The reasons are:

At a certain time each day, the machine will heat up the mix to kill any bacteria. This is usually done late at night, so you probably won't be getting any ice cream.

Weekly cleaning means you have to take the entire machine apart and it legitimately does take hours.

If you're selling a lot, the machine can't keep up and it'll start putting out extremely soft ice cream. Usually it's sold anyway, but you can't do stuff like dip cones if it does this.

If someone's done the daily cleaning, they're probably not going to fuck it up just so you can get a cone. Again, should be a late night issue.

It can just legitimately not work.

And also sometimes it's super-busy/the employees are lazy and they just don't want to give you any.

Same problem at the Mcdonalds I worked at. Saw this mentioned on the internet a few times and it's apparently not at all uncommon.

The ice cream will get soft if used too many times too quickly. Or if it's hot inside the restaurant. And especially both.

Also, McFlurry machines will AUTOMATICALLY go into lock if not cleaned regularly, the machine is preprogrammed to do so if not done before a certain time.

It takes 20 minutes to do a cleaning cycle. Which unfortunately happens (as of a few years ago at least) during their 3-hour "Happy Hour" period. In our case, about 3 PM or so, during (hopefully) slow business periods.
