I follow it a little bit. Watched Crash because I just played the remake. Also Super Monkey Ball because that's one of the most enjoyable series to watch speedrunning of imo.

Generations question: I've heard that the general consensus is that modern Sonic focuses too much on "gotta go fast" and Generations looks like the biggest offender of that. people seemed to like Generations though, way more than other modern Sonics anyway. what gives?

Generally when you see a game played by speedrunners, it's a little bit faster than typical gameplay

is this true for generations? it just looked like the game's normal speed, almost QTE-ish at times

I wouldn't say it's a problem. However, it is an area the can be improved upon. Good commentary makes a better event than not bad commentary.

I'm usually fine with the commentary. Could it be better? Like, probably, but I think improvements will come with pros and cons so I'm not personally stressing about it.


What was the consensus on Mirror's Edge Catalyst anyway? ME was too flawed to become a classic game, but it proved to have excellent mechanics and it deserved a sequel. I didn't hear a lot about MEC though, so I just figured it was more of the same but now in an open world.

I got there late, but saw chat constantly taunting "couch guy" for being fat/ugly/angry. I had just assumed it was Twitch chat being awful as usual, but was there some sort of issue between the runner and the guy on the couch?

Commentary is mostly fine, the only thing I get tight about is when they say that a game is poorly programmed. Like dude, it took you guys 10 years to find this skip, clearly the programmers did a pretty good job preventing it

Donation comments on the other hand are absolutely horrid and I would actually pay 50 dollars for an alternate audio stream that didn't read them

DK64 has many problems and I don't get why people defend it too often. I forgot how glitchy the game was too, but at least that's a positive tonight.

I heard the reason it required the N64 Expansion Pack it shipped with wasn't because it needed enhanced graphics or support for extra modes, but because the game was designed so poorly it would crash without it...so they just made the game require it. I can't verify this, but what I heard made it sound like it was an emergency measure more than a bonus.

For what it's worth, I fucking love when they call games out as poorly programmed because it makes me feel better about my own abilities as a developer by reminding me that no, these guys aren't massively superior to me just because they worked on something like this

(Doubly so when it's something that I can actually at least somewhat identify what they did and why it's bad/lazy. Like most things in Gen 1 pokemon <_<)

it was and it was 100% the donation reader's fault. he said he was doing it blindfolded and the donation reader was like "LOL HERE'S A DONATION."

a donation reader should only read donations when the runner/couch gives them permission to do so. he didn't ask for permission, and the fact that the runner was blindfolded and was obviously relying on audio cues makes it even more moronic that he read the donation anyway.

to slightly defend that donation reader, i will admit that he's not the only one to do this. the reader in the omnibus run that just happened read a donation without asking for permission too, for instance.

it still pisses me off whenever a reader does this, though. your donation readings can wait. you should never just assume the runner isn't working on some super hard frame perfect trick they have to concentrate on.

These days I find the overall sound both ambient and SFX in Banjo weirdly grating. I'm guessing it's cus it's a speedrun so everything is being spammed more harshly, but i had to mute the stream.

They failed the RNG manip at the start (multiple times)

They had a backup DS, but it was prepped so early that the hour on the DS clock rolled over, meaning that one didn't have manipped RNG either.

It's recoverable, but hella slow early game.

This is the same fucking Raikou they'd have pulled if they got the RNG manip at the very start of the run. Very much the same thing as backup save in case an important item disappears.
