You pour your heart and soul into crafting a world and its characters and telling a compelling story or several. But then, for whatever reason, you lose your creative control over your own world and are at the whims of some suits in an office who will impose whatever changes they want in the name of mass appeal, and can and will replace you if they don't like the direction you're taking your own work in (or if you actually want to end it at a place where you feel is perfect instead of drawing it out indefinitely).

As a hopeful future graphic novelist, this prospect scares me, if I ever have to go to a publisher instead of going independent.

Actually, one of the things I'm concerned about is that they would change my Black MC White in the name of "general appeal", and because this particular work is action/sci-fi/urban fantasy. Plus, his being Black isn't really a defining trait of his and could theoretically be changed to any other race without changing his overall character.

That aside, no publisher would not have to worry about a lack of diversity in this work.

That's the only real way to really get into some types of media. You might be able to get away with being on your own if your lucky but to get real notoriety you have to sell yourself to the big wigs.

No one cares about comics or graphic novels these days so you won't have to worry about editorial interference unless you are writing for marvel or dc.
And most publishers outside of dc and marvel let creators keep control of their works all the publishers do these days is print your book.

Then you write your own work explicitly saying that the people in your world's souls jumped into your new work while the work not controlled by you anymore are robots. Most people tend to follow the words of the original author over the new owners before the characters have been developed/established anymore.
