Not from nyc but i've visited many times. It is much more crowded than where i'm from. It would be ok i think to visit from time to time. What is your opinion? Would you even know?

I know that even with 50k salary you'll struggle without roommates

Ridiculous COL, not bad as San Fran tho

On the flipslide it is a very fun area

Manhattan has decent nightlife. It is very pricey but there's lots to do. It is just a fun overall place to be

Definitely lots more to do than most. Local areas also deserve a visit.

If it weren't for the ridiculous COL and mice problems I'd consider moving there

I used to hang out there all the time, because my girlfriend used to live there.

It's fine, and I could probably live there if I absolutely had to (or if someone else was paying for my housing), but I definitely prefer the suburbs. Growing up in NJ sort of institutionalized me - I got too used to the idea of having everything I need close, but still having a degree of privacy you tend to lack in NYC.

Owning your own house comes with its own list of problems and responsibilities, but I'd much rather go that route than own an apartment in NYC.

I might be more inclined to lean more towards NYC if I was more of an extrovert and thus likely to take much greater advantage of the social networks and nightlife there, but it's never really been my scene.

NYC always felt like a much better place to visit and hang out in than it was somewhere I'd want to live full-time.

Less mice problems and more cockroach and rat issues. Along with the occasional bedbug infestation.

Plus, for most parts of the city, you should pretty much give up all pretense of owning a car, because it will be hellish to keep and use one there (you're much better off walking/using cabs/taking the subway).

Could imagine it, but would never want to do it. Cities are crowded, loud, dirty, dingy places.

I imagine the "fun area" bit is half the reason why people might struggle =p

It's honestly very unappealing to me in every way except "more stuff will be open 24h".

-very little privacy
-extremely difficult to use a car
-high cost of living
-likely have to rent rather than own a place to live

Never been to NYC but would like to visit. I bet the food and atmosphere are great (as a tourist). No way in hell I'd live there though.

I'm not too sure. I love cities, but I don't know if a city that big would be right for me. I'm from Montreal, which is quite a bit smaller (but still big), and I feel very at home there. I'd love to visit NYC one day. It seems like it would be a good place to spend a week or two even if you wouldn't live there.
