#1 - Your audience is everyone on Twitter. If any sizable chunk of your audience goes up in arms, you've done a poor job conveying your joke.

his audience is not "all of twitter," it's way more than that. most of his audience liked it, it became the most popular tweet he's ever had, and the main people who hated it are people who hated him in the first place. who then proceeded to cover it more than anything else, so that's a great job as it takes away news from failed health care.

that one's just shitposting and gloating if you want something more concrete. gotta remember that the context here is that CNN was caught between Project Veritas establishing that some think the Russia story is fake and CNN themselves having to retract a Russian story because they couldn't prove it (see: it was fake). immediately after that for the first time in a long time, stories about Russia all but vanished on them and that itself became a story.

and the meme came after that.

If CNN's history is allowed to be brought in for context against them, I don't understand why Donald's history isn't allowed. You suggest shitposting and his more substantial actions against CNN aren't the same thing, but they seem to be working toward the same goals: insult and devalue CNN.

oh no, in the grander scheme of things it definitely does just that. he's mocking them, making a jab against them due to what's gone on, and furthering the FAKE NEWS narrative by making them the ass end of a joke. i just take issue to this particular thing being viewed as a call to violence, a symbol of his mental health (you didn't bring this up, it's just the thing that frustrated me the most), or anything more than a pretty shitty joke that blew up because he's the president.

Attempting to claim that it is a simple process is where we separate. The presenter of a joke only matters if they are actually presenting it. A post on Twitter requires no presentation; the presentation in that instance was by WWE and to a lesser extent by the editor of the clip (with the Photoshop). It was not by Trump and therefore he is not the individual who is presenting the joke. He is relaying a joke already made. He is your uncle, not Groucho Marx.
