Perhaps a brave step considering the 1-Up Shroom is so iconic, but also for the best. Nintendo has struggled to have lives in Mario mean anything at all for quite a long time.

Then you have negative coins and can't buy anything until you pay off your debt.

j/k you prolly just stop getting penalized at that point.

Well they don't serve a purpose when extra lives are handed out like Halloween candy and you can save up hundreds or thousands of them.

Beg's a lot of questions... Why have coins at all? I assume they'll be currency instead of 100=free life. Also weird they changed the value of a life to 10 coins instead of 100.

Not sure what direction they're heading here. I guess lose 10 coins and start at the last check point? Same thing as dying but without the game over screen.

I won't be playing this since I won't own a switch, but I am intrigued.

There's probably some type of metagame that you need to spend coins in. Maybe you pay to unlock new levels/worlds, or maybe there is some kind of customizable area that you pay to customize.

I played it.

You have to buy new outfits. Some content is only available if you're wearing certain clothes.

In addition to coins, each world also has its own special currency and to buy everything you'll need to collect all the special currency + asstons of generic coins. This is for 100%. I'm sure you can probably beat the game without actually buying any outfits.

Hmm, okay. I don't know what that is, but it seems like you could go from like 2-3 to 6-1 to 1-4, ect and not have a whole new level layout every time you go into a level. But if that is the case, and you never get the same level twice, then that's awesome.

Question for people who find this to be an issue:

Donkey Kong Country Returns/Tropical Freeze have an abundance of lives to the point where you will likely never game over. Both games are hard to complete to the final boss, both games are infuriatingly hard to beat 100%. They are extremely hard modern platformers with a life pool so large that they might as well not even exist.

Hence... why bother? Difficult and lives don't go hand in hand. This extends far beyond platformers. Dark Souls isn't made easy by infinite lives and relatively lax punishments for failure, it's made difficult by the gameplay.

On a related note, Sunshine & Galaxy's hardest levels aren't made difficult by live restrictions, they're made hard by the actual gameplay. Noki Bay Secret is hard because you have to have a good grasp on the platforming of the game to be able to beat the level, not because limited lives exist.

Life restrictions making a game hard would be a crutch/substitute for actual difficult gameplay. I don't need a life mechanic to make Dark Souls hard because Dark Souls is already adequately difficult based on the gameplay.

You'd get a new level each time and they're going to be hard as balls. You've got 100 lives to complete 100 stages. You can only gain a maximum of 3 lives per stage through any means.

Non-sequitur. Challenge comes from level design, not how many menus you gotta go through to try again after messing up enough times.

Super Meat Boy is considered amazingly difficult and does not use lives or game overs. Face it, lives are an archaic concept dating back to when arcade machines swallowed quarters faster than cheap whores swallow semen. They serve no purpose in modern gaming except to make a game seems "retro" or to artificially inflate difficulty.

@Bad_Mojo

Super Mario Maker was a game released on the Wii U. It allows owners of the game to design and upload levels for other people to play, and you can play levels other people created. Levels are ranked according to the ratio of people completing them to people playing them. Things with less than 1% clear rate are considered "Super Expert" and are typically either ingeniously difficult or tediously stupid to the point where no one bothers finishing them. Since you HAVE to beat your own level before you can upload it, it is always possible to beat them somehow.

In addition to playing levels from people you know or levels you have the code for, you can choose to play a Course based on difficulty such as Easy, Normal, etc. The game then picks levels randomly from the difficulty you chose and gives you a set number of lives to clear them. Super Expert is the hardest. You get 100 lives to clear 8 levels, and you can only gain three lives per level giving you a max total of 121. Fortunately, the game includes an option to skip a level if it is total bullshit (and believe me, some ARE total bullshit). This does not reduce the number of levels you need to clear to finish your course, but simply replaces your current level with a new random one from the difficulty you're playing on.

While it sounds kinda dumb on paper, the Mario Maker community has come up with some AMAZING levels at all difficulties. Many of them are far, far better than anything Nintendo every created. If you want "hard" levels, there's an entire community dedicated to just Kaizo levels, which are borderline insane.

This is a good example of what a standard Super Expert run looks like
