It's due to VV normalizing the jump physics for all the Crash games. Originally each game had different physics that it was built around.

I get not wanting to make three separate jumping mechanics

But shouldn't you at least compensate for that? Considering it's a fucking core element of gameplay?

Holy shit backtracking is not a good game design..

Trying to get the box gym in level 9 before ripper roo and I had no clue where to go after the metal box. Also on Ripper Roo there's places you can hide to the right of all the platforms. Figured that out way too late.

I never completed the first one as a kid. Didn't the box count and bonus tokens reset after every checkpoint in the original? I guess that's a plus.

Go to the side he only jumps diagonals for the first two hits it seems.

Only hit the boxes that go down stream , the ones near the back of the waterfall have really bad hitboxes.

For the third hit you have to venture out and activate two boxes (one near the back of the waterfall that sucks, , and one mid platform) and it'll trap him.

I didn't have a single issue with Native Fortress.

I did, however, suffer greatly on road to nowhere. That's where the level design took a shit back in 1996, and it still takes a shit today. Continued many times til I beat it.

The second one "high road" is also difficult, but slightly easier.

And then Slippery Climb had me stuck for a couple hours - though nowhere near as bad as road to nowhere. I actually used to like Slippery Climb back in the day, too - so the aggregation wasn't as bad (they actually planned to have a second level in this design which was much harder too - playable on game shark on original ps1 version).

I beat the game on Saturday night. I didn't remember the bosses at all so I'm pretty sure I haven't beaten the game since the 90s, lol.

And yeah High Road and Slippery Climb are back to back, too. Naughty Dog didn't give a fuck back then.

The remaster is factually harder than the first one. The jump physics are different (the speed of the jump and platform physics) and the levels load all at once as opposed to in chunks like the originals so hazards will very often be out of sync with the level

Use the directional pad for the diagonals.

Games really weird where some levels are best with old school controls and some aren't.

Maybe some of the hitboxes, like the flames in Native Fortress. They "burn" way higher than the actual flames themselves.

OG Crash 1 was hard but nothing insane.

I mean a few levels that take double-digit tries can count as hard but the difficulty mostly comes from the old school "if you run out of lives, much progress will be lost" BS.

This game does not require you to not lose a life in order to get every gem, which that factor alone makes the original harder

Wait they added relics to crash 1? Goddamn. That game was hard enough as it is.

I always thought 2 and 3 were easier, but they were also more fun. Crash 1 was just hard because the controls were fucked. Especially in side scroller sections because you'd go an inch too far close or close to the screen and miss a jump. Always kinda pissed me off. If you're doing a 3D platformer, let me have a forward look

Yep. IIRC, I believe Naughty Dog (in 96) made High Road first - so it was more "fleshed out" for some reason. The Road to Nowhere was made more as a necessity - as they needed another level.

To me, the difference I'm noticing is that I seem to have to jump later then I normally would. Maybe it's in my mind, but I feel like I have to get to the VERRYY edge of every platform before I jump. If I'm not on the tip of the edge, I won't make the jump to the next platform. It's infuriating.

I only got 2 through my first tour of the first island. Both - being the "constant moving" levels. Boulders and Hog Wild. I guess I've had the spots memorized where the boxes are since 1996.

Crash 1 is the only real challenging Crash game

2 and 3 are beyond easy, especially the boss fights

The real challenge in 2 and 3 is trying to get 100%, especially the time relics. the levels themselves are for the most part a breeze and the bosses can be beaten by 5 year olds

Crash 1 has some hard as fuck stages, ESPECIALLY road to nowhere

Had a hard time climbing the rainy castle back then too
