Does that mean I can a Vive for $600 in the near future? $800 is pretty brutal for something that has basically no real games. >_>

That's half tempting. My father bought one for Elite Dangerous. It's fucking sweet.

I don't care so much about first person VR, I like just being in the world of it. Lucky's Tale, a VR platformer was fucking amazing visually.

I could image in world in the not-to-distance future of people using VR instead of a real monitor for their workstation, would be great in Alaska and other places where people get depressed easily because of the daylight hours. Or if you lived in a shitty little cramped apartment, VR to change the mood.
Desktop in the VR still needs a lot of work though.

Oh important note though, for full tracking parity with the Vive you probably need a third sensor, which is another $59.

Has it really been around that long?

Anyway, I don't want "virtual reality", I want "cool shit I can do with motion tracking and a headset". The best way to use VR is by taking what we already enjoy about video games and make it more immersive. I don't know if there's anything out there yet that actually accomplishes that.

Almost exactly 5 years since the beginning.

Look at Robo Recall and Lone Echo, those are both some really cool shit you can do with motion tracking and a headset. Robo Recall is basically just an arcade shooter but with the motion controllers you can throw robots at other robots, rip off their limbs (and throw them at other robots), use their bodies as shields, etc. To grab each specific gun you literally reach to where each gun would be hanging on your body and grab it.

Lone Echo has this multiplayer shit called Echo Arena which is basically zero-g ultimate frisbee a la Ender's Game. You move by pushing off of objects in the arena, you can latch on to other people and use them as boosts, etc. Plus it has a kickass lobby which is an actual physical space where you can talk to other players and train and fuck around with objects.

Alien Isolation is scary enough by itself, it's fucking terrifying in VR.

so are there any compatibility issues if someone gets oculus rift vs htc vive? like some games might not work with oculus rift? or is it just better accuracy in spatial recognition?

Tracking accuracy is pretty close to perfect with both at this point, though the Vive is easier to set up and can have a slightly bigger range.

The rift is essentially compatible with everything (though there can be some control issues in games not designed for it). The Vive is the same as long as you have this mod called revive which let's you play oculus games.
