NASCAR is not serious. Why should I be serious?

NASCAR/Auto Racing in general has claimed more lives than most "real sports" like Football, baseball, & Basketball.

Yet it's not "serious" or a "real sport".

So what defines a "real sport"? NASCAR drivers earn points towards a championship like F-1, IndyCar, Rally, etc. Drivers and teams constantly work out to stay in shape just like any other sport. NASCAR races are often longer than NFL games, MLB games, NHL games and NBA games. Plus the teams compete over 50 times a season (Cup, Xfinity, Truck, local races etc).

I think racing cars is sort of like a sport in the same vein as polo or horse racing. But in the same way, it's kind of like a way for businesses to make money lol

No, I'm totally in agreement that Auto Racing is a legit sport.

I was just being sarcastic by mocking them with that last part. Them Not taking Nascar seriously despite being as if not more dangerous than most sports.

Yeah i agree.
Certainly going around left for 500 mile (indy 500) is better sport than going against the barrier in the port (monaco gp)

Eh..

A sport usually involves some kind of atheletic ability

Drive straight 'n turn to the left doesn't cut it.

Also :
Gas is expensive and isnt good for the air
Most fans are only there to see 'splosions!

Ever try to drive a car with no AC and the temperature in the car reaching 150 degrees for 3+ hours? Try it sometime at a track like Bristol where you have to shift gears 2,000 times in a race (four shifts per lap times 500 laps) and then come back and say NASCAR doesn't require athletic ability. Oh, and you also have to do it with the loss of power steering.

I am not a NASCAR fan in any way but I watched this year's Daytona 500 for the first time ever, and damn that stuff is intense! It most definitely IS a sport.

I was amazed at how much actually goes into a race. The drivers and crews are under a alot of physical and mental stress, and perform at nearly flawless levels with amazing speed and efficiency. Calculating fuel usage, speeds, angles, timing.. I was not expecting to enjoy it, or even stay tuned in, but I ended up watching the whole thing and got pretty into it.

I would go as far to say that NASCAR is more demanding than many other "sports"

Sounds like a trip I took in my first car (No AC, shot suspension, obviously no power steering) to my ex's folks place.. first and only time I pushed my car to max. speed (200km p/h)

..where's my oversized bottle of champagne?

You didn't do that competitively though, or abide by any of the rules & regulations of NASCAR most probably, & 200km per hour is no were near as fast as 190 MILES per hour.

This is like if you were playing mini golf with your mates in your backyard & after winning, expected to be declared the PGA world champ or something. Its not the same thing.

Just pick a driver to root for and it gets even better. I won't be your friend if you pick Jimmie Johnson, though.

Ok, I will first find out who Jimmie Johnson is and then not root for him because I need all the friends I can get.

I can see why some people only watch it for the crashes, (i'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy them) but in all seriousness, I did gain an appreciation for the sport after watching and doing some reading about aspects that I found interesting.

Stock car racing (what NASCAR is) is a fairly unique style of motorsport. The tracks may be simple, but they are not easy. This allows the drivers to race each other rather than just the track. There's more passing in one race in NASCAR than Formula 1 has in an entire season. The cars are designed to handle poorly and are fairly obsolete in many aspects which makes for some very physical racing, IE the old saying "rubbing's racing", especially at the short tracks.

There are many highly talented young drivers in the field now, such as Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, and Ryan Blaney.
