I can just imagine the loudmouth with the camera is some middle aged, fat, blonde entitled white woman of at least middle class or better.

Yes the security went too far

But screw shoplifters

Where can I follow what happened here, wanna know where this goes

Google. http://katu.com/news/local/police-teen-resists-loss-prevention-staff-at-winco-booked-for-robbery
It looked like they were a little rough from the video, but she clearly wasn't as beat up as some of the bystanders were saying. They have a small store statement too but wonder what'll happen to those guys.

Both the store personnel and the girl could have handled the situation better, but that's pretty much what I thought would happen. Most, likely all, states allow merchants to detain thieves. Plus, the minor injury she had seemed to be from resisting the detainment... but I'm sure the "lawyer" in the video knew that.

Why weren't the cops called in? Like, that's the criminal right there.

This dude is fired. I'm sure HR is freaking the fuck out. Dragging a kid to the ground? Forget the potential lawsuit, just the bad press alone is enough to send HR into crisis mode. I've never worked at a place that wasn't terrified of bad press. People stealing doesn't kill businesses, but bad PR sure as hell will. No company would want something like this to go viral just to safeguard a candy bar.

BTW, loss prevention is there mainly to keep employees from stealing (the real source of loss by theft) and to keep inventory mistakes from happening. They're really not supposed to be grabbing on customers at all.

More places need to do this and stop letting shoplifters get away with a morally reprehensible crime.

The company's job is to make money, not police society's morals. It's always cheaper to let the shoplifter go than to risk a PR nightmare, worker injury, or a lawsuit.

As head of Loss Prevention, escalating things over such a simple matter is unnecessary. Usually in a situation like this I approach them and say something like "I know what you took, just give it back and you can walk out of here. No cops and I won't let anyone stop you on your way Out". You'd be amazed how far being cool and collective can get you

Sounds reasonable

I thought stores were allowed to detain thieves until the cops rocked up? I think it's probably too far over petty theft, but there would be nothing to fear if you could just walk out of a store.

Was expecting worse. Didn't look too bad. Bystanders and the girl not cooperating made them use more force but didn't look excessive.

When I did security at target we wouldn't bust people for food or anything under 25 dollars.

As for whether they did anything illegal it would depend on the state.

I really wanted one of them to punch a bystander. They were annoying as shit.

Why speak when you don't know what you're talking about?

I think the security went too far, but Jesus fuck that woman recording was so annoying. I strongly doubt that woman is a lawyer and her shrieking did nothing but escalate the situation. The dumb bitch is asking for someone else to call the cops while she has her phone in her hand. Give me a break.

When. I worked security at target we had a takedown in the parking lot. Woman recording and yelling about how she was a lawyer and would be filing the lawsuit for the guy. Never been sued despite lots of threats.

The store isn't going to press charges against her at all unless they want to double-down on the bad PR. They'll probably let her go and apologize.

I don't know how it works in other states and would never have stopped someone over a candy bar but once that happens I'm 100% filing charges. In CA for me to detain someone for stealing I place them under a citizens arrest which means I have to call the cops and file the paperwork or I just basically kidnapped someone.

Cops would have to take a report but theres no chance the da would file the charges on that.
