Well, I think it has the implication of having an overinflated sense of self-importance, thinking you're some warrior of justice when you're really just some random dude ranting on the internet.

yes this is exactly what a SJW is. Like most things it's meaning has changed as people appropriated it for their own uses, just like the word ignorant, bigot, etc.

Leonhart has the right idea.

I think it's when people stop being a critic of something and start to get worked up and demand change for any perceived slight. A critic is able to have a discussion, an SJW to me is someone you can't have a discussion with.

I mean, is that really all it takes to qualify as a valid insult?

I could aggressively call someone a barbley nurboobapa and based purely off of my tone of voice they'd feel insulted, among other emotions caused by someone shouting gibberish at you. Does that make that a valid insult?

If you're complaining how much a blanket term SJW has become, that's just how things work. There is virtually no room for any gray area. (At least when discussing things, media, politics, aka the things people pay attention to). But I'm sure you guys are aware of this.

It's not even that some of their ideas are bad or that they don't have good messages. It's that the way they go about to do it or the pure malice they have for those who disagree with them on even one point is probably at the highest it's ever been. So of course there's going to be a term to clump all of these people into a group.

As for an insult. I'd say it's valid as long as the person being insulted knows what it means. There is an off chance the person would wear the badge with pride though, I mean that's how divided I feel things have become.

No because it doesn't actually refer to a group of people. There is no way for you to nail down who is and is not part of that group. It's purely based on personal whim.

This is a growing problem I've seen on other communities. People who see no gray area in social issues, and if you're not with them 100%, you're scum. Take Neogaf for example. A couple of weeks ago there was a topic about Anita Sarkeesian (to say she's popular on Neogaf is an understatement). There were 2 voices of dissent in the topic, and they both got banned. One of them simply said that Anita isn't relevant anymore. The other guy wasn't a troll ether, just critical of Anita. But he got labeled as an alt-righter and everyone cheered when he was banned. They legitimately saw it as justice served. It makes me realize how good we have it here, where differing opinions aren't silenced, for the most part.

I'm pretty sure you consider me an SJW and like...

I don't see either "cisgender" or "heterosexual" as insults. They're words that are useful for categorizing people. They actually both come from Latin word roots. Trans and Cis are greek words for across and the same--they have been used in Chemistry for decades (see trans-fats and cis-fats). Same with homo and hetero--they are prefixes meaning same and mixed; they are also used in words like homogeneous and heterogeneous.

Like...seriously, why would someone be insulted if I said they were heterosexual? Unless they were homosexual and were insulted that I assumed otherwise? I don't get it.

No one uses cis as an insult, only people who are anxious of their own deep desires to become a woman think of it as an insult. Just embrace it dude.

I believe the idea is that you *should* be ashamed/insulted for being called things that you actually are - that's why the word 'liberal' is used as a perjorative, even when it's accurately applied.

Alongside that, people get very offended when they're told that their characteristics can inform/limit their opinions/viewpoints.

yes, that's an insult in SJWs' minds

This is another great example

I use "cultural appropriation" therefore I am an SJW
I don't use "heterosexual" as an insult therefore I am not an SJW

Is this a horribly obvious and untenable contradiction of definition that only absolute idiots that don't think about what they're saying for more than 0.5 seconds would make? No, of course not. It's just that SJW means something different in each of those uses. It's a sort of quantum probabilistic field of SJWness that we are all in (except for, completely coincidentally, all redpills and gamergaters).

No, actually. This is one of the most interesting effects of the word SJW.

Notice how his first sentence was addressing me directly as a person ("you should meme that"), but his second sentence became super indirect and speaking to some theoretical general audience ("yes, that's an insult in SJWs' minds").

Any sentence that refers to SJWs or accuses someone of being an SJW immediately stops being about any actual individual, and instead becomes about the abstract notion of an SJW. It's impossible to talk about an individual actually being an SJW, it's all about the theoretical SJWness in society as a whole. In that way, anti-SJW is an aggressively collectivist mindset that eats up all individuality that it touches. This includes anti-SJWs themselves, leaving them as soulless zombies (vlado, wang, etc).
