Oh man, pretty funny. My prediction is that you'll beat those carts in the order you listed.

Got my practice run of Blight down to 9 deaths, little surprised again! Time to see the real deal.

Actual Blight run -- 8 deaths! 1:08:26 with 80 total deaths.

Can I run through Ruin forwards and backwards in under 22 minutes? Fuck yeah.

First practices:

Ruin: 102 deaths (!)
Acceptance: 39 deaths, failed at room #3 (!)

Argh...there are certain choke points I'm gonna have to be real careful on.

Okay well I decided to give Acceptance one try tonight and made it to 5-1 right away.

So I think that's a sign I've sufficiently "mastered" the first 4 levels.

But that doesn't mean I wanna do them again and again because I'm trial-and-erroring this first jump in 5-1.

Idk how to do it. But I'm scared to try because it just means repeating the levels.

Not really fun, to be honest.

Do I just jump up against the wall above, then wait until I pass the spike and hold left?

Seems really tricky.

Woohoo I tried it and died.

I mean, I don't really know if I need to 100% this game.

I 100%ed Super Meat Boy.

But that was at a different time in my life.

Maybe I'm okay with moving on.

Sigh.

I made it to 5-...4? On my next attempt.

I died in a dumb way, but the level was easy.

So I guess I can do it.

Really, got that far in +Acceptance your first time? Super impressed.

Haha, yeah though, the game ends with a disappointing kind of cheap difficulty compared to the many great types of difficulty it and SMB has. I feel ya. Do what's best for you.

I think you can run and jump against the wall to drop down to it on 5-1. The way I did it was to hang against the ledge first then short-hop to it -- I forget if I hit the wall or not, but just hold left and you'll catch it consistently.

And I have no real advice for timing then those ghosts are coming from that ledge that blocks the view. Get a feel for it -- you're safe if you hang from the ledge above.

5-4 scares me so much (with the balloon), but I only died a time or three.

There are only five levels -- shortest of all the worlds.

I couldn't make myself give up, so I resorted to just multitasking - playing through Acceptance while watching TV on my second monitor, so I could just mindlessly go through the first 4 areas only half paying attention, while actually doing something useful with my time.

I died on 5-1 and 5-3 a few more times.

It was actually 5-3 I died on last night, not 5-4.

I made it through 5-4 without ever dying.

I fell off the screen two or three times in 5-5 but luckily I didn't die, so that's that.

Beat 5-5 on my first try.

But fuck Rubble Bobble. What the fuck is with that ring at the top corner of 8-3? Am I missing something? The only way to get it is to do a stupid pixel-perfect split-second jump and hang on the ledge...

I don't know if I'll ever do Super Mega Cart. If I ever finish Rubble Bobble.

okay I finally got rubble bobble

now to do super mega cart or not...

i dunno.

honestly the ring carts were probably my least favourite part of the game

i think it's because they had such leniant life systems that i never had to learn to do them properly, i'd just collect rings and die and generally be okay.

Glad you got it. My only advice for that ring (top-right, right?) is that you can probably jump a frame or two later than you think feels right.

I liked Super Mega Cart better than Acceptance, but then I also went unbreakable on all the carts individually before I finished it.

well

I tried super mega cart just once, collecting all rings

I ran out of lives by 5-1

and that was the easy half!

I don't really think I want to beat this cart, so...

Have I missed anything else in the game? Other than achievements, which I don't care about. Beaten all other carts, found everything, beaten all worlds...

Yeah, all I did was beat it. I miiiiight good around to see if I'm close to beating it without using a continue, but no way I'm doing the rings or unbreakable.

And I think that's it! Maybe you wanna find Isaac in Anguish, but nothing else of real note.

Go time.

Ruin in 8! Acceptance in 10! Got my two achievements!

Final time: 1:17:44
Final death count: 98
(20% done lol)

I really don't think I care enough about +SMC to try it without using a continue. I'll goof around with Pus-Man to see if I can steal an unbreakable from glitched carts, but otherwise I'm content with my level of rocking this game.

I guess that's where I'm at as well.

But I haven't gotten the !s.

Is that how you got +42%?

Either way, I'm at 99%. I got a few levels into area 10 of Super Mega Cart but... eh. I'm okay. Don't really wanna do those levels again.

Completing +SMC will be how you reach 100%. Once you reach 100%, then it'll give you that (__) section that I think is based off of how many cart achievements mentioned in the cart menu you got. I don't know if that number is affected by obtaining unbreakable achievements though.

I gave it one more try and got to about 10-5 before losing all my lives.

So... that's that.

Can't keep doing SMC and feeling shitty when I die in world 10 because I can't practice it and have to just keep redoing all the same 90 levels.

It's been fun.

Thanks for making this topic, I enjoyed playing the game blind and just talking about it here. Reminds me of the good old days when we were kids and just played games without knowing everything that was coming and could only talk to a friend for advice and hints. Don't really get that experience with games anymore, strangely enough.

I still love this game's design. It's fresh in just the right ways. Little things like discovering the split, the keys and carts, the future monsters, wondering what the body parts are for and getting to the future, the final area and it's backwards chase, etc. The game isn't super new, but it always kept me guessing at what was gonna happen next. I feel like I don't get that sense of discovery from a lot of games nowadays.

Oh man, you're so close! Replaying all those levels is definitely a drag, no question. At least Mystery Castle has some bumping music. 10-10 is...well...look it up if you're not gonna play it. Totally wish I could play this "cart" and Ghost Town from Acceptance individually. There are some bold tricks I would love to practice on (like I think I can make that top jump in 5-2 instead of dropping down to climb back up).

I might jump on Super Meat Boy while I have my 360 controller plugged in -- I try to stick to my Steam controller, but its d-pad is a much better touch sensor than an actual d-pad so it wasn't gonna work here.

Quality game. I make a list of my favorite games I played every two years, and this is a front-runner right away. It'll be neat to see how Super Meat Boy Forever compares next year. Figure I'll see you then -- thanks for playing along!

Oh wow, you died like 4,000 times less than me (and finished maybe ten hours ahead). Part of it is my "swag or bodybag" style, but still -- huge difference! I focused on easy rings in the early carts so I wouldn't have to care later on to get the 500-achievement.

Good job surviving the viciousness of 10-10. I have to believe somebody accidentally died there on their first time entering that level.

Well, I didn't get the deathless !s anywhere. So that's a big difference in time/deaths.

As a sidenote, you said you hadn't played Jumper, right?

You should give them a try.

http://www.mattmakesgames.com/

You can download them here.

I'd say start with Jumper 2. If you like it, Jumper Redux. Then Jumper 3.

They're what got me into this genre in the first place.

They're very outdated, especially the physics, but you might still enjoy them. You might not. But worth checking out.

Bookmarked!

So I tried SMB on a challenge from my brother two months ago -- he knew I was good, but he was super impressed I could beat the Forest without dying without having played it in forever. Think I died 17 times in its Dark World.

Then TEiN came out.

I just played through the Forest again, and I died many more times. Wow, things feel differently. Air momentum, getting stuck to walls, holding the run button, can't fall faster, so floaty -- like, this feels really weird now. Set aside thirty minutes sometime and see what I mean -- it's like relearning the game.

Yeah, I see what you mean. The physics are very different.

But I was never one of the people saying "TeiN is exactly like Super Meat Boy", in fact I said it's about as different as you can feel given it's the same genre and artist.
