I have 7 years retail cashiering experience, so as far as me being able to do the job, absolutely i could.

I did a cursory search, I might have to take a pay cut to be a bank teller(I make 11.25 now), but there is probably much, much more room for pay increases and bonuses, i assume. So it'd be like taking a temporary pay cut but I'd probably soar higher than I currently am quicker.

Whats it like? Been thinking since I am now into currency and coins, why not be a cashier but deal with stuff I enjoy playing with? thats also a fairly respected position? Seems enticing to me. I dunno.

I would have assumed a bank teller makes more than that to be honest.

But yes, at the very least there's much more room for advancement, benefits tend to be good, and most people I know who worked for a bank had insane Christmas parties with amazing prizes.

No but I work with them closely (audit credit unions)

It's very easy. You just need to be very organized, and most of the tellers I meet are very very good people person(s)

I think the biggest obstacle is not asking questions when you don't know something. Credit unions/banks will have a lot of internal audits and the one that affects tellers the most would be a surprise cash count (which can be performed on a monthly, semi annually, annual, basis). Basically your cash drawer gets checked to make sure all the money is there. As long as you ask questions and are willing to learn it's a very decent job, tons of room for advancement whether it be lateral (going to another bank/credit union with came/sorta different position) and vertical

Also working with people a lot obviously tryna open accounts.

FYI, the biggest advice I have for someone just starting out in the industry is to read the policy. You will impress a lot of people if you know the in's and out's at your level.

I also want to point out that the Financial Institution/Service industry is very conservative so expect to see a lot of older/stodgy people and stale dated technology. It is getting slightly better tho

I know one of the things I'd need to work on is rejecting people if I cannot fulfill their request. working retail for a major chain, there is some leeway. policy states one thing, but if the customer complains you can sometimes just go "eh, okay i can do this just once" or something but at a bank thats your job you just lost. I know you have to be way more professional and on point, which I am at my current job. But I would have to be way way more steadfast.

Do you have to do any up-selling at your retail cashiering job? Imagine having to keep doing that to a small group of regular customers because your job depends on it. Bank tellers are one of the more egregious examples of the trend in customer service to shift from providing the service that the customer wants to trying to sell the customer a product or service they neither want nor need.

If I am asked to make changes for my job I would.

But I dont see on what grounds they could ask me to get a haircut if its always kept tidy and in a ponytail, which it normally is, unless they also ask females to do the same.

I was a teller for a credit union in high school/college. In '97 I was making $8.75 by the time I left five years later I was making $14. Since CUs are not for profit there was no pressure to cross sell items. When I started we had to wear suit and tie. Towards the end it was khakis and polo shirts.

It was an easy job with much room for advancement depending on number of branches in the area. It was normal for people to move from teller-member services-loan officers in a span of five years. My credit union also paid 80% of my tuition in college as long as I maintained a 3.0 or better average.

Mostly because hair length is not a protected class.

The credit union I worked for was pretty relaxed on appearances. In high school I had long hair in a pony tail. People had dyed hair colors (blue, green, etc.) they said they were okay with it as long as no one complained.

Wouldnt it be discriminatory to ask males to get a haircut but not females?

regardless, if i got a job as a bank teller I would change my appearance to fit. I wouldnt be happy I'd have to cut my luxurious locks, but at the same time a job is more important

I have once before, and I would do it again since the haircut is free.

I always wondered if females ever get that question? I get that question all the dang time

not really. there's typically a stricter dress code and dudes with hair down to their butts don't usually fall in line with that because, for a dude, it's "unprofessional "

if I was hiring for a grocery store or a bar or something, I wouldn't care. but a bank, or restaurant or whatever, I totally care

If you are so concerned about your appearance/cutting hair just go with a CU. You still need to look nice but CUs are definitely more progressive than your standard bank

Saw a teller with an awesome dyed hair scheme the other day, she would've been turned away unfortunately at some place like Bank of America. Really is silly how these things can disqualify someone because she was one of my favs to work with

This. As I said the CU I was a teller at was very relaxed. I even dyed my goatee at Christmas time half green half red and they were fine with it.

No but I used to fuck one

She made $14 an hour. Not bad for standing in one spot most of the day while being friendly to people.

She had a degree is some dumb art thing but I'm not sure if that was a requirement (a degree, obviously not in some dumb art thing)
