Agreed.
There's a certain charm in walking the line between goofy and dark but he didn't do the goofy side particularly well, barring the "I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate HATE YOU" line (which was pure gold). Most of his goofiness either came from being a failure or being the butt of a joke, both of which actually undermine his credibility as a villain, which is the last thing you want in an RPG. I will definitely give credit to the way they seemed to try to leverage that in order to throw the player off and make the flying continent a turning point where you realize you should have taken him more seriously, but they failed to follow through afterward by essentially removing him as a character entirely for the majority of the remaining game. The whole thing comes across as great ideas but poor execution. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

Yeah that's pretty much spot on. I mean I didn't really think that highly of FF7 either, because FF6 was just better, but Sephiroth was at least incredibly menacing. You always pretty much perceived as an absolute murdering unstable nutso.
