I haven't watched since Karen Gillan left, was Capaldi even good?

This lady looks the part, there's no rule saying they have to regenerate the same gender every time, and it will cause a huge storm of pissy broflakes. It's basically win/win/win

He's okay, but I'm still mourning Matt Smith. He's my favorite.

How much do you want to bet there's already people bitching and claiming "Doctor Who is dead" due to this casting?

Oh absolutely.

10 was my first and will likely always be my favorite. 11 was good too though.

I can't wait for the "SJWs!!!!! pandering!!!!!" crowd. I mean I've always been a bit leery of the "make the doctor a woman!" crowd, but if I remember correctly, the only reason there's another regeneration in the first place is because River Song gave up her own regenerations for The Doctor, so it makes sense for his regenerations to be women now.

Of course, the only reason the above even happened is because River Song became a Time Lord, because her parents Amy and Rory were time-travelling during her conception and the sperm and egg/zygote was affected by time radiation, turning her into a Time Lord. So I mean you can still blame this on bad writing. Still, I'm down to clown with this new Doctor.

Who gives the Doctor regenerations has nothing to do with what sex he'll be (Matt Smith: "I'M A GIRL!"), The Master. And River didn't give him her regens, she revived him from death by giving up hers. He received new regens from Gallifrey. Again, Christmas episode.

Personally, I find nothing more dull than white british ladies as leads. She could be a great actress but this is the lowest form of appealing to diversity movements.

Why do you think that? Are you so dead set in your position that the Doctor has to be male that it couldn't possibly be anything but pandering to you?

Ahh, okay. I was gonna throw up a disclaimer that my hold on the canon is tenuous at best, because I haven't seen the show since like series 5 but kept up with the spoilers. Thanks for the correction.

No, I'd be perfectly fine if they had the balls to make her East Asian British, South Asian British, Middle Eastern British, African British. It is the fact that they chose a white British actress which I find dull. Same can be said for Star Wars, they could have chosen anyone to be the lead in Rogue One and they chose a white British lady. There are plenty of great British actresses who are not white.

I just want to see HOW she handles the role after the dust settles. Because, usually every time the Doctor has changed, they become a bit loopy and don't fully fit into the role tell all their memories return.

If people are upset about this, it's not because of the pandering or anything it's because they lack the knowledge of the show

Timelords can regenerate into whatever gender or race they want. It's literally as canon as canon can get

I'm just glad that Moffat isn't the boss any more. I never liked his stuff as showrunner - The Empty Child was rad as fuck, but his go-to mood was "spooky cosmic/Gothic horror" and "completely exaggerated world-shattering event that will leave the universe in complete shock and disarray". Rebooting the entire universe as the payoff in Series 5 was the straw that broke the camel's back for me, and with every new development (Time Lord zygote, The Doctor's name being a massive fucking deal, tying River Song into just about everything [which was inevitable given the Library episodes that Moffat wrote during Davies' run]) I just stopped giving a shit. The only exposure I had to the Capaldi stuff was an episode about the monster under your bed, and while I imagine the entire run isn't along the same lines, I was not a happy camper.

I hope to watch through all of Moffat's era and draw up an actual informed opinion, not just reacting to garbage I don't like. But for now, I'm just happy that some other person gets to handle the reins from here on in.

It would probably be hard to do though. Animals and Child actors are usually pretty terrible to deal with, unless they're CGI and then that would just ruin the show.

I am looking forward to seeing how the Female Doctor is AFTER the first 2-3 episodes. Because that's usually the point where you can see how the actor or actress fits into the role.

I'm fine with it. As long as she's good it doesn't really matter. But the shitshow on both sides is going to be insufferable and the "progressivism" behind the choice is still eye-rolling.

A lot of people have zero faith in the writers to handle it well rather than the casting itself. Moffat's pandering was notorious in later episodes of his tenure, so hopefully with him gone they moved beyond that hamfisted cringe and can do it with a bit more deftness. I can understand why a show with a most likely predominantly male audience doesn't want to be told how stupid they are by a character they've grown to love over the years or having said character be used as a mouthpiece for some showrunner's obsession with earning brownie points.

You mean where The Master and Missy team up, The Doctor's side kick get's a cartoon sized hole blown through her. Turned into a retro Cyberman and it ends with the The Master and Missy not being able to regenerate. The Doctor meets the first Doctor (even though the actual actor has been dead for years.)

Yeah, I saw that. I'm just looking forward to seeing how she fits into the role of The Doctor once she get's into the swing of it.

This. It makes sense just fine in universe, but in real life there's a pretty clear reasoning and Moffat has not been subtle in the past. It's when the real world starts interfering with stuff in universe that it gets obnoxious.

The Doctor still has all his or her own memories, just with a completely different personality. So they will still be good, but can go from being compassionate to being a dick, etc.
