5. Field of Dreams (72)

Wickle - 1
Inviso - 2
Scarlet - 4
Karo - 11
Red - 14
JONA - 16
Snake - 24

Wickle - You know, it's funny how many little catchphrases that really popped out during high school suddenly make sense. Never really saw where "if you build it, he will come" came from. Also a few other statements I can just talk about if it matters. But it really was funny watching Sandlot and then this movie, strictly for the James Earl Jones repeats. But to get on with this film... it's beautiful. And especially how I started crying during that ending scene. I may not have known any of those players, or even had a clue if any of them were real, but just the idea of this. And hell, even ending the movie with all the headlights pulling in and along the road just to show that the idea of people will come actually does happen. It felt like Signs at the start, but became something truly stunning as it came along. Just a lot of meaning behind the movie.

Inviso - The first movie I watched on the list to make me cry, which is usually a good sign that the movie did a solid job of making me feel connected to the characters and their story. It’s not even a sports movie so much as it’s the story of a man having a mid-life crisis, with sports as a backdrop. The whole theme of this movie is setting right past wrongs through the mystical force of baseball, and it’s just touching all the way through.

Scarlet - I came.

Film MVP: Kevin Costner
Rating: 83/100

Karo - Due to hearing a mysterious voice, a farmer ends up destroying half his farm to put in a baseball field. Whether it was God or schizophrenia that inspired him we never really find out.

The ghosts of dead baseball players start showing up and the protagonist ends up a road trip with Darth Vader for reasons that are not adequately explained.

Its a cute little movie that maybe relies a bit too much on mystic mumbo-jumbo to advance the plot.

Red - This is a tough one because I feel like if I were just seeing it for the first time I'd probably rank it higher, but I like it less and less every time I see it. When you know the twists and where the movie is going, many of the scenes have a lot less impact as the voice of convenience leads the main character along. The problem with this movie is rather simple, it can feel very slow and very boring. While some of the twists and reveals are interesting, even when you know them, the movie tends to drag them out at a snails pace. Most scenes are drawn out to death and last way too long.

JONA - Despite its dumb premise of baseball playing ghosts, it won me over with its good acting and emotional moments.

Snake - This is a film that does heartwearming drama just right, Costner is amazing in his role, displaying all the right emotions to feel heartful without being corny or manipulative.

4. Warrior (71)

Inviso - 4
Wickle - 4

Red - 5
Scarlet - 9
Snake - 11
Karo - 17
JONA - 21

Inviso - I didn’t think a movie about UFC would intrigue me as much as this one did, but godDAMN Warrior was amazing. Yeah, it’s a bit slow at the start because they’re trying to establish two separate main characters in the same span of time…but once you get about 40 minutes in, it’s non-stop from then on. You’ve got just two diametrically opposed characters competing for their own reasons and it’s fascinating to watch two brothers follow such differing paths. Tommy the former marine hero/deserter who goes for the kill every fight, while Brendan is a former fighter, turned teacher, just trying to win to save his house from foreclosure. They’ve just got such different styles that it’s hard to pick which guy to root for (spoilers, I’m Team Brendan.) And hell, Nick Nolte’s a heartbreaking character too…especially when he breaks his sobriety towards the end of the movie. It’s great all around.

Wickle - I cri evritime. All kidding aside, I did cry in that 5th round, and also really thought all the stuff happening in the semi-finals was actually a bunch of loser flags for Brendan. For as much hate that I give MMA, and a lot of it because of my squeamish nature, which is also why I passed on doing the horror list... I loved this movie. Still do kind of wish it had an ending where turns out he didn't need all of the prize money so gave some to the wife of that lost soldier in his brother's stead.

Red - Two brothers taking vastly differnet paths in the world of fighting to face each other in the finals of a tournament ends up a fairly compelling story. They both split from home and the movie ends up about their contrasting paths towards reconciliations. Even their fighting styles serve to contrast their path to the end, one winning via technical prowess, the other merely pounding his opponents to decisive victory. Despite taking a bit of time to really discern where the plot is going, when you realize the cohesiveness that the story has set up all the way to end, you end up pleasantly surprised.

Scarlet - This film came out of nowhere and really floored me with its gripping narrative. I just can’t quite find the words to explain why this film worked so well for me. While it felt a little manipulative, I can’t help but express how real the film became as I watched it. One of those great stories that makes you forget that there’s a screen between you and the action. Simple, intimate, and just excellent all around.

Snake - This film hooked me right away and didn’t let go till the very end. I love Tom Hardy’s performance and the score as well. The MMA action is incredible. One thing these sports film always do well is their actual sports scenes and Warrior is no exception.

Karo - The story of two brothers who are MMA fighters. The two of them compete in an event billed as 'the first MMA elimination tournament ever' because we apparently are in an alternate reality where UFC 1 never happened, or the writers couldn’t be arsed to take 10 seconds to do a google search.

A lot of the early parts of the movie feel confusing and disjointed as the plot juggles the lives of the two protagonists, and the way that the brothers look somewhat similar to each other does not help.

The tournament itself takes up the entire second half of the film, which would have been okay if not for the fact that which two characters were going to be in the final was as obvious as a Yu-Gi-Oh episode.

We have some shake-ups as a spot-on from Wickle allows him to leapfrog Karo and Scarlet to take third place and move within four points of JONA. Meanwhile, Scarlet's ranking moves him ahead of Karo as well. My spot-on opens up a nearly twenty-point gap between me and JONA however, with not much time left for anyone to take back that first place victory, if any at all.

3. A League of Their Own (64)

Inviso - 3
Red - 4
JONA - 5
Scarlet - 6
Wickle - 11
Karo - 13
Snake - 22

Inviso - Another one that made me tear up at the end. I really liked this movie for several reasons. First off, despite having an ensemble cast of quirky personalities, this isn’t your standard sports movie in that regard. These are legitimate athletes who just happen to be quirky. So unlike your Major League, the plot doesn’t need to be about them training to overcome their underdog status. Instead, you get to watch real, human stories about the characters as PEOPLE living in a unique time period for women. I find it fascinating watching them have to deal with the issues of the era, because they’re so good at the sports that nothing else can phase them. It’s really great.

Red - Pretty much every female sports movie on this list is about people not approving of them playing. And this kind of epitomizes that, but unlike others, this movie stays more with the sport itself and its daily struggles, rather than some outside family dragging a girl back repeatedly. You've got a lot of characters with unique defined personalites and a lot of actual baseball(Which yes, I am incredibly biased towards). I think the competition and struggle is a bit more fleshed out in this one. Its built up from the tryouts where it shows that these girls are actually good at what they do, allowing for more internal drama and competition, rather than a girls in sports movie where the struggle is always someone trying to hold them back or pull them away.

JONA - The movie has such a great cast and has some amazing dramatic and emotional moments. I really loved the segment with the two sisters arguing and all the players listening in. It does the switch between serious and funny just about instantly and it feels natural.

Scarlet - What really needs to be said about one of the most iconic sports movies of all time? It’s exactly what you’ve come to expect in period sports flicks – a little bit of heart, a little bit of discrimination… Of course, what carries this film is the greatest actor of this or any generation, as he delivers one of the most well-recognized lines in film history.

Wickle - Cute movie, one of the first cases of showing us girls playing a sport and the only reason we knew women's baseball once existed. It had a slow feeling for chunks of the movie, but stressed what I really like about many older films. Films can talk about sex and still be mature, not immature trash constantly hinting at the stuff or showing it on screen. Plus they could have picked any story, any winner's story, but they stuck to the team that ended up losing, and I like that. About all I've got.

Karo - A female baseball league is formed during World War 2 due to most of the male players being drafted or something. The team we follow is composed of a bunch of girls, plus Rosie O’Donnell and a man in drag (those are separate characters).

The characters and their interaction are the big star of the show here, although the aforementioned Rosie O’Donnell can just go fuck herself with a baseball bat.

Snake - This is a really entertaining look at a piece of sports history. I really like the contrasting character of the two sisters, and their meeting in the final game is a great moment, though more development of Kit would’ve made it better. I think what I love most about the film is the period it is set in, the backdrop of war adds some interesting social problems to make the film more than just about baseball. It’s entertaining, but nothing terribly special.

2. Rocky (60)

Scarlet - 1
Red - 2
JONA - 3
Snake - 9
Wickle - 9
Inviso - 11
Karo - 25

Scarlet - The definition of a sports film, Rocky hides it’s wit beneath a gruff and grunting exterior. But there’s a charm in simplicity. Apollo Creed is neither a villain nor a hero, and Rocky himself certainly isn’t the spitting image of a sports Superman. But both men become irreversibly intertwined as the movie version of a Muhammad Ali seeks to self-aggrandize at the bicentennial of the United States. For his part, Rocky is soft-spoken, full of that Yogi Berra-like wisdom. The beauty of this film is that it takes you on the hero’s journey, that Joseph Campbell created psychological rite of passage. Rocky and Creed meet to do battle and the result is exactly what it should be. It’s a pyrrhic victory at best, summed up so beautifully in Weathers’ delivery of “Ain’t gonna be no rematch.” Little details all feed into the grander picture of Rocky and the ultimate underdog story. A film deserving of its accolades, and a film that defined my parents’ generation and their concept of a hero.

Film MVP: Carl Weathers
Rating: 93/100

Red - The underdog story of underdog stories. Rocky is an essential nobody that trains to fight the heavyweight champion of the world. Hes meant to lose, be a publicity stunt. But the power of the montage is too strong and by the end of the movie is a real contender. As a character Rocky is one you want to root for, you want him to win, even when you know he can't. Even when he knows he cant. But this isn't your usual story where the main character wins, and despite the fact he doesn't, the movie has built it to that point that its a fulfilling experience. He comes out with a moral victory and defined the training montage, and that is enough to make a good movie.

JONA - Rocky is such a good character and a really great likable underdog. This is still the best underdog movie and is a classic for a reason.

Snake - Everyone knows Rocky, obviously the most famous boxing movie of all time and probably sports movie too. It’s the original inspirational sports film, and basically every film after it does it worse. It loses nothing however by its derivites. It’s still a classic, from Stallone’s iconic performance as the Italian Stallion, to the amazing boxing match with Apollo Creed. Burgess Meredith is also fantastic here.

Wickle - The cinematography was so bad, but that's mostly to be expected regarding the era it was made in. Watching a lot of these movies, we witness a lot of main characters with similar back stories... live in the slums, fight or play some sport to make a living... just, they barely make do with their lives. But none of the other main characters are as good as Rocky Balboa. He was awkward, started the movie talking to himself, invited a girl into his home who just didn't want to be there, and a lot more. He's not a fantastic character, but he's a lot more understandable, especially right before the match with Apollo where he realizes "ya know, I got no chance, but so be it. I'll go the distance." It's a fantastically done story, and also great that while not winning, it showed up as an underdog story just for what he was able to achieve. Just lol at the actual boxing, there are times I couldn't tell if they were pulled punches with some acting from the competitor, or if they were actually supposed to be believable punches.

Inviso - This movie was really sweet. Like, yeah, it’s about sports, boxing specifically. But more than that, it’s a character piece into the mind of this guy who hasn’t really amounted to much in his life. All he’s ever been good for is fighting, but even then he’s nothing TOO special. He catches the break of his life and works his ass off just to not get outright embarrassed by the World Heavyweight Champion, and it’s a happy ending even in a loss. I appreciate taking that road with the ending.

Karo - The story of a boxer from the Mafia, who from the way he talks either has down syndrome or was hit in the head far too many times.

Anyway he gets his big chance to duke it out with some american flag obsessed boxing champion, and a great deal of the movie is Rocky training for his big fight and bluhing out some gibberish like 'ahy clulah ble wa cotehdah' and other stuff about boxing. (I assume he is talking about boxing, but he could be talking about the oil prices in Azerbaijan and nobody would know the difference because his speech is so incomprehensible)

The big day finally arrives and nobody gives him much of a chance in the match. For good reason it seems as he loses the fight anyway. Despite this result Rocky is proud of the fact he tried, thus ignoring Yoda's wisdom completely.

Though this film is the classic sports underdog story, there is just way too much time spent on the mundane life of this meathead with no charisma or presence and it is frankly very boring.

1. Moneyball (26)

Karo - 1
Snake - 1

Scarlet - 2
Wickle - 2
Inviso - 5
JONA - 6
Red - 9

Karo - A movie about a baseball GM who endeavors to win the world series via the use of microsoft excel.

The establishment is of course resistant to someone who would eschew star power in favor of equipping his players with a +2 Baseball Bat of Ogre Slaying, and a lot of the film is him wrestling with his naysayers.

The main characters trying to break the system with their nerdy stats is just plain awesome, and it provides lots of entertainment.

Snake - Moneyball stands heads and shoulders above the other films of this project. By focusing on the management side of baseball, it is one of the most unique films on the list with some of the best acting to match. Pitt doesn’t disappoint as the rattled Billy Beane, a man struggling to keep his job as his divorce and relationship to his daugher hangs over his head. Moneyball is also the film to make me pay attention to Jonah Hill, a surprisingly versatile dramatic actor and the scene-stealer here. The strategies used to recruit players never stops being a gripping storyline, and shows that the off-field action can be just as fun as the on-the field action.

Scarlet - With one of my favorite scripts of the last ten years, Aaron Sorkin takes the mind-numbing arithmetic of baseball and wields it like a weapon, telling the (ultimately) sad story of Billy Beane. The beauty of this film is how seamlessly Sorkin works with dialogue. The deft-touch with which he brandishes a pen is just phenomenal. Little mannerisms are quickly presented and become second nature to each character’s demeanors and personalities even as other subjects are discussed. There is no exposition because conversations talk about things without talking about them. There’s never a time to rest your brain in this film because Sorkin is ready to move on to the next line, and consequently (much like his work on West Wing) you are engrossed with each nuance of a strange, normally indecipherable aspect of baseball.

And with such a bittersweet ending, how can you not stop and just reflect for a moment? The fact that Beane is still searching for that Series is a powerful cap to a fantastic film.

Film MVP: Brad Pitt
Rating: 91/100

Wickle - You're such a loser dad. Man, all I need is one more film to cry at and all of my top 5 films will have made me tear up. To be honest, it started to get boring at one point in the movie but in reality, that's probably because it's not all about cuts and signings as a General Manager, sometimes you've got to be sitting there. But yes, I love the fact that we had a true story not about a player, but about a GM after the many experiences where we got to see good and bad gms. And plus, I'm trying to be a scout in the NFL, this movie also appealed to me, even if baseball... to see scouting being done based on what you've got. And just the relationship Billy had with his daughter was great.

Inviso - My ONLY complaint with this movie, and the reason it’s not ranked even higher, is that it felt like it dragged on a LITTLE bit towards the end. Like, it didn’t need the 2:13:00 runtime and could’ve been trimmed to a neat 2:00:00. Other than that though, it was utterly fascinating watching a baseball movie in which the focus was more on the GM role and finding players that could properly fill roles than anything else. Yeah, a ragtag team is a common trope in sports movies, but this movie was less about the ragtag players and more about the backstage antics of the GM. I found that EXTREMELY interesting and not once did this movie lose my attention until the aforementioned slow ending.

JONA - It doesn't matter what I say in this writeup because it's Moneyball.

Red - My biggest issue with this film is that they kind of tried to extend it with scenes of Billy Beane's personal life, but they feel forced and awkward, in particular the scene with his wife and her current husband. They are meant to show he has some sort of stake in needing to keep his job, but at the same time, you never really feel his job is in jeopardy, particularly since you know how the story ends. The story is much more interesting in the baseball parts, as the old guard is forced to deal with this new way of thinking. Though to be fair, while the As employed moneyball, their story is hardly one of the more successful. They won 1 more regular season game than the previous year, lost in the first round of the playoffs again. Basically leaving with the message that moneyball leaves you exactly where traditional baseball thinking does(Assuming they ran a similar budget year to year). It also neglects to mention their big 3 starters that carried that team to a lot of their wins. But really, I just thinking this movie excels at the baseball portion but when it runs outside of that it drags quite a bit.

Outlier Stats:

*****Inviso - 278
****JONA - 292
*****Scarlet - 298
**Wickle - 304
*Red - 330
*Karo - 332
*Snake - 434

I finally won something! i'm the most normal! Despite having my number 1 out SUPER early, I guess having my 2-5 all make the top 5 made all the difference. Also, despite his early string of spot-ons, Scarlet hit a drought late in the list, and thus allowed me to tie him for the spot-on win as well. Meanwhile, Snake finishes the ranking more than a hundred points behind sixth place. So...good for him?

Interesting list

I don't think if I asked 100 sports fans I knew if any of them would say Moneyball is their favorite sports movie

Surprised to see Moneyball #1. Thought for sure that'd be Rocky.

Moneyball was a really solid film that was just kind of objectively well made, but it was also pretty forgettable imo

This so much.

Also guess what happens to your small market teams once everyone evaluates players the same way(Which they don't, because the big market teams have more resources for more technology and more traditional scouts, so they have a leg up in the evaluation department too).

Its kind of funny because moneyball is a reasonably new movie, but its impact on the sport is already pretty dated.

Also Paul Depodesta, since the real events of moneyball, has been hired, fired, hired, fired, hired fired and now is out of baseball entirely.

Hes currently employed by the...Cleveland Browns.

As for Billy Beane, hes never been able to have a firm grasp of his personal, nor been able to grasp a competitive cycle in the way of a franchise like the Royals or to a lesser extent the Rays(And on the big market side, the Cubs). Oakland has basically been a farming ground for other teams, developing players and dumping them off in their prime(MLB prospects will always be lottery tickets), never able to hang onto a core all in their prime at once to really make a world series run(Or a couple of runs or so, as other teams have done).
