I never saw the remakes, but I like that the original didn't have them quite as intelligent as human beings. The scene with the paper airplane is one of the best in the film.

I'd say Caesar is average or maybe a bit higher then average. The rest outside his orangutan friend seem to be towards the lower end of human intelligence.

But that scene could have played exactly the same with humans from the less technological past. You missed the subtlety of that scene. He dismisses flight as an impossibility, then angrily crushes the paper plane in his grasp. The point of his character is that he acts unimpressed and dismissive, but he's afraid of scientific progress because it might disprove what he holds to be true as the keeper of the apes' faith. The film outright states as much later on when Charlton Heston's character is on trial. And I guess it could be argued that the apes simply aren't as far along in their advancement, but it struck me as suggesting that it was beyond their capability to figure out the laws of aerodynamics. ... Caesar I would say is definitely above average human intelligence by the third movie.
