Seems like there's a lot of games in recent time only focusing on having good gameplay

But they're written like Bee Movies at best

The original metal gear solid had an amazing script (and also one of the largest scripts, i remember hayter or someone commenting it was as thick as two phonebooks or some shit) and some of the most memorable moments in entertainment media

Though in recent gens thats gone out the window due to mostly western companies homogenizing their releases in order to "appeal to everyone" aka appeal to the lowest common denominator low attention span normie idiots, so we can't have decent in depth plots and such because "omg how do i skip this shit and get to the part where i kill stuff"

Gaming becoming mainstream was a mistake. Luckily all the actual good games of past gens still exist and can be enjoyed and the current age of mostly garbage can just be ignored entirely

Eh, I still find the stories in today's games more entertaining than whatever today's movies and TV shows can come up with.

the story itself isn't great but I can't think of any movie or show that has a concept as unique or interesting as Bioshock.

Mgs series up to 3 had the best story I've experienced in gaming.

I've yet to play any game this gen with a half decent or interesting story.

Remember the original Resident Evil? I mean the first one ever on Playstation.

"What?! What... is.. this?"

Things have gotten so, so much better since then that I feel I have zero room to complain at this point. Telltale for one does a great job of story telling without the cheese and lame voice acting. There are definitely others, like Bioshock to name one series.

The Walking Dead Season 1 is on par (arguably above) the show. You can debate whether it's a game or not though.

Telltale for one does

did

They've really gone downhill imo and they're always doing 11 things at once, dunno how they dont think quality will suffer because of that

Also we will never get another Sam & Max which is unforgivable, some of the dialogue and writing in those games rivaled or eclipsed their newer more serious products tbh

Yeah, fallout 4 is a great example of how that ruins a series that WAS pretty good in the story and dialog dept

yeah but having a voiced protag watered down the depth even further

Fair.. I had high expectations for Guardians of the Galaxy and through 2 episodes now it's lackluster.

That's still an extremely small minority of video games.

The only video game I've ever played that has a story and story presentation that is legit on par with other media, film, etc, is The Last of Us.

And this is coming from a guy who considers The Witcher 3 to be the best game ever made. Yeah, it has a great story, but it's still a "video game story".

The Last of Us could have been watched by normal people and would be appreciated for having a good story with a strong theme and strong characters, and proper beginning, middle and end.

Also, I love Metal Gear games, but they're a poor example of good story telling imo.

Metal Gear is a great video game story, but it doesn't stack up with traditional storytelling.

I'm with you on that. Never played The Witcher 3

There are lots of novel or cinema lev of videogames story if you look deeper than the usual AAA shit.

Age of decadence has amazing writing on par with novels, planescape torment is a timeless legend, etc.

And videogames dont always have to follow traditional storytelling. Games like dark souls, the shock games tells good story without interrupting the gameplay and nier's + automata storytelling is great as we as their story.
