so don't ban guns
don't ban abortions
don't ban drugs
don't ban people immigrating

everything is legal because if we make something illegal people will do it anyways?

no more speeding tickets or speed limits (don't stop people speeding)
no more bank regulations (bank cheat people anyways)
no more tax penalties (people get around taxes anyways)
gangs and mobs are a-ok (them being illegal didn't make them not exist)

They don't. It's just to cater to the Bible thumpers' votes.

Most republicans don't actually care about abortion, or the consequences of banning abortion in general. It's just one of their pet issues they use as a flag to wave for poor/uneducated/heavily religious voting brackets. They can't win those people over with economic policies designed to wreck them, so they play on social issues instead
