I've seen jobs on USAjob.gov that require a phd and 10+ years experience and pay is around 40k

That doens't sound right...can't see someone with that level of experience being a GS-7. What agency was it with?

I forget. This was awhile ago and I don't qualify for it so I didn't spend much time looking at it.

You just need two jobs, for a combined total of over 70 hours a week of work

Oh. Is that all I need? :3

If it's for a post doctoral fellowship, this is standard. The term is generally 1-3 years with the intent of transitioning into a professorship either at the same or a different institution. The salary adjustment at this point is approximately a 3-4 fold increase for a scientist (non arts-based). The tenure-track to Associate and Full Professor then incurs concomitant salary increases.

and somehow you need to find a $600/month place to buy or rent... which is pretty much a studio

and if you have a family that's not going to work

I live 15 ~ 20 minutes from the downtown in my states capital and pay $685 for a four bedroom

Professors in the federal government? Maybe at the military academies and I really doubt they'd pay that low.

No- for the fellowship, not for the professorship. The federal government does not employ professors. Government funds specific labs & salaried tenure-track positions at Universities for professorships.

The original poster and I were talking about postings on USAJobs so I'm not sure if this is that relevant.

We will never know unless JoeX can confirm whether the posting was for a post doctoral fellowship.
